In recent years, it has become fashionable to decorate gardens in a natural style - "naturgarden", - imitating the corners of nature with beautiful wild plants planted in natural disorder. One of the varieties of naturgarden is a herb garden. Stylish, unpretentious, resistant to the vagaries of nature, it is laid for many years and requires a minimum of fertilizers and care. It is unusually beautiful in late autumn and winter. Ornamental grasses vary in height (up to 2 m), color (striped, edged, yellow, brownish, pink, burgundy, etc.), shape (erect, growing in hummocks, etc.), some can withstand drought or flooding. Let's dwell on some of them.

Tall grasses

Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) is an unpretentious species, forms a tall, about human growth, hillocky hummock. Blooms very effectively in late summer and early autumn. Its long rhizome needs a reliable stop. The root system is shallow, and a 20 cm wide plastic tape dug in will suffice. Only at the joints, it is imperative to make an overlap of the ribbon and a side (from it) about 5 cm high. The plant does not need insulation for the winter.

For Miscanthus, it is important to choose a warm, sunny location and fertile, well-moisturized soil. For all herbs that wake up late, including miscanthus, they use a simple method of early awakening - spill a curtain of warm water (+ 40 … + 45 ° C) and fertilize with ammonia fertilizers. Otherwise, the plants may not have enough time for full development and flowering.

Canary cane, or two-source cane, Filaris (Phalaris arundinacea) reaches 1.5 m in height, is resistant to rain and wind, extremely unpretentious. However, aggressive, needs a restraint. It has strong creeping rhizomes and is capable of growing on barren dry soil, but prefers moist soil. Feels good in the sun and partial shade. This valuable garden grass is always decorative. It grows in early spring. It goes well with perennials: peonies, Siberian irises, hosts. Hibernates without shelter.

Hairy feather grass, or Hairy feather grass (Stipa capillata) reaches a height of 30-80 cm. This ornamental grass prefers an open sunny place and soil without moisture stagnation, it is much better for drought. Its bluish green leaves and white inflorescences are especially beautiful when planted in clumps. Feather grass is propagated by seeds. But if you have problems with the respiratory system (allergies or asthma), do not plant feather grass - exacerbations may appear.

Reed grass (Calamagrostis acutiflora) grows very quickly, is unpretentious, easily tolerates drought, grows both in the sun and in partial shade. In especially harsh winters, it needs light shelter. Unlike many other ornamental grasses, it thrives on heavy clayey soils. It grows very early and quickly. The plant forms compact bumps. It goes very well with daylilies, lupines, loosestrife, aconites, anemones, hosts and perennial asters.

Rod millet (Panicum virgatum) is an ornamental perennial herb with beautiful inflorescences. It begins to grow in late spring. The root system is very powerful and deep, but not creeping, the plant forms a compact hummock, which turns red by autumn. Millet is unpretentious to fertility and watering. It is better to choose a warm, sunny place for it. It goes well with shrub asters, lilies, catnip. Millet is an ideal neighbor for spring bulbs.

Medium-sized herbs

Evergreen sheep, or Helictotrichon (Helictotrichon sempervirens) is a very beautiful silver-blue bush, compact, 30-50 cm high, up to 1 m in diameter, forms a regular hemispherical hummock. Prefers a sunny and dry location. Does not tolerate excess moisture. The transplant is hard. Looks very nice with conifers, with red-leaved and yellow-leaved barberries and vesicles, with early flowering small-bulbous.

Medium-sized ornamental grasses also include: meadow or pike (Deschampsia), sandy spikelet (Leymus arenarius), high ryegrass, or French ryegrass (Arrhenatherum elatius).

Stunted grasses

Gray or blue fescue (Festuca glauca) forms low (about 30 cm) lush bumps of a bluish-blue color. Its very narrow leaves look graceful. Loves an open, sunny place and light fertile soil with good drainage. The cereal is quite capricious, it can get wet due to dampness, it requires regular division (every 2-3 years). Fescue looks great in alpine hills, it goes well with low perennials: Carpathian and Pozharsky bells, felt fescue, spikelet spikelet, geyhera, hosta, lungwort, cuff.

The group of low-growing cereals also includes: maned barley (Hordeum jubatum), blue sesleria (Sesleria caerulea), gray keleria (Koeleria glauca).

On a note

In damp problem areas, you can plant a large, or large manna (Glyceria maxima), white-bordered in combination with airavid iris, buzulnik, ferns, hosts.

In sunny places there will be a beautiful combination of maned barley with escholtia, purslane; lightning with versk, erik and various creeping, columnar and spherical conifers. Miscanthuses look good in a group with mordovnik, tall stonecrops, catnip, and subulate phlox, geychera, low carnations are great for the lower tier.
