In many regions of our country, in November, “the forest was bare, the fields were empty” … Larch, the only non-evergreen coniferous tree, is gradually dropping its needles. Only one-year-old seedlings do not lose their needles during the first year of life.
But how beautiful the larch is in May, when several dozen light green soft needles appear on its shoots from each bud! In summer, the deciduous forest is always light and festive, even in cloudy weather. And in late autumn and winter, she stands naked, but still full of hidden vitality and therefore beautiful.

Larch wood is the strongest and most durable among all our other species. It is so heavy that it sinks in water. But it does not rot and does not succumb to worms and grinder beetles. It is surprising that larch hardens more and more in water, and after a few years it is impossible to saw such “stained” wood (the saw breaks), it is impossible to drive a nail into it.
In 1858, after the water level fell in the Danube, the piles of the Troyan Bridge, built by the Romans 1,700 years ago, were exposed. These were piles of larch, and from time to time they not only did not deteriorate, but hardened so much that turning tools crumbled on them.
In terms of its qualities, larch was superior to oak and therefore was used for the construction of ships. In Arkhangelsk, from the time of Peter and until the middle of the nineteenth century, about 500 ships were made of larch.

It has long been used to build temples from larch, and in the old days it was striking in its durability. In the Warsaw province, for example, there was a parish church, which was built from larch in 1242 and was active until 1849, that is, for more than six centuries.
All the window frames of the Winter Palace were made from the same amazing tree. Larch wood was also used for wine barrels, and the wine in them did not spoil for many years; it was used to make parquet flooring, which did not require touching up, and railway sleepers. Even stringed musical instruments were made, but here it was still inferior to spruce. Larch resin is used to prepare ointments for joint pain. And if the tree is on fire, it gives a transparent reddish gum, sweetish in taste. It dissolves well in water and has an antiscorbutic effect.

Under Kostroma in the XII century, as the chronicles tell, there were huge impenetrable forests of oak and larch. But over time, the reserves of larch began to decline, and then a decree appeared, imposing a ban on its use. Thanks to this decree and the lack of roads, forests with larch have survived mainly in the north of our country.
