Cacti are definitely wonderful plants. Who doesn't love cacti? Cacti are easy enough to grow, but you have to love them or they won't work. You have a cactus. You value it. What measure do you think should be taken in this case? Propagate! But how? There are subtleties in this.

The easiest way is grafting. A shoot is just taken (from an adult plant) and … Many people think: all cuttings should be put in water. This is almost the case. But cacti are an exception. On the contrary, they must be dried, and then rooting will improve. You can also put in water - but then they will take root worse. This has been proven in practice! But, usually, this can be done from an existing cactus. What if you want to propagate a cactus that is not sold "ready-made" in the store. Then, of course, the seeds!

The best seeding time is March and April. A nine-centimeter glass can serve as a dish, or even better - a small bowl, which is filled with large pieces of peat, shards and coals (a special earthen mixture for cacti is also sold in stores). The container is filled with this mixture so that there is still a free space 1 cm high. The earth is leveled, and seeds are poured on top. Small seeds are left not covered (otherwise they will not be able to sprout), and large ones are covered with a layer of earth equal to the diameter of the seed itself.

Water the seeds only with a fine sprayer jet so as not to mix them. They should be on the very surface, because delicate seedlings may not break through and suffocate. When the bowls with seeds are ready, they are covered with a glass lid and placed on a windowsill lit by the sun, the seedlings need warmth. In addition, to prevent the soil from drying out quickly, the pots are covered with a sheet of paper before germination. The lid is removed every day and wiped dry, and the soil should be moistened if necessary.

It often happens that moss appears on the surface of the earth, which not only interferes with the penetration of air into the ground, but also completely blocks the path to the development of the seedling. In this case, it is required to immediately transplant the seedlings, and in exactly the same pot and in the same soil as when sowing. You need to very carefully, preferably with tweezers, pull out the plants, and make sure that the roots are covered with earth.

Then, with a peg, make a neat hole in a new pot and lower it there, up to the cotyledons of the cactus, and make sure that the roots are not raised up. The distance between the seedlings is 3 cm. So the seedlings can remain in a common container for 1.5 years, and only after that they are planted in separate pots. They need to be watered more often than adult cacti because their delicate tissue dries out more easily.

You may find what I wrote too complicated. But this is not the case. I, almost new to this business, have planted a mixture of cacti, and 3 are still alive. I don't know what kind they are, because I grew them from a mixture of seeds. I keep it near the window under the lamp.
