Video: Growing Hippeastrum Hydroponics
The charming and graceful hippeastrum is one of the most beloved winter-flowering indoor plants. These bright representatives of the bulbous family have long won the status of classical culture and are found in almost every home. The popularity of hippeastrum is largely due to the ease with which it is grown. It is enough to provide the plant with the correct rest period - and luxurious fiery gramophones of flowers on an elegant peduncle will decorate the windowsills. Hippeastrum are so unpretentious that they can be grown without soil at all.
There are many advantages to the extra-soil method of growing hippeastrum. It allows you to get rid of dirt, use decorative transparent containers for growing plants, simplify plant care and actively introduce lush hippeastrum into the interior, using them as living bouquets even in the decor of the dining table. Hygiene, aesthetics and lightness are the main "trump cards" of growing hippeastrum without a substrate. The mobility and beauty of flowering in these plants does not suffer from the change in maintenance technology.
Technically speaking, the hydroponic method of growing these bulbs is no big deal. Containers suitable for hydroponics, with or without self-irrigation systems, can be purchased at any specialized garden or flower shop. For bulbous ones, you can even purchase pots already filled with expanded clay, ready for planting. There, you can easily find special fertilizers for hydroponics, which are used to prepare a nutrient solution that provides plants with everything they need for normal development.

Обычно при посадке соблюдают ту же глубину, что и при высадке в обычный грунт, заглубляя луковицы на три четверти или две третей высоты. Такая посадка позволяет защитить чувствительные точки роста от намокания и одновременно не даст растению опрокинуться или наклониться под тяжестью надземных побегов. Обычно на гидропонику «переводят» находящиеся в стадии покоя новые луковицы, но можно сменить метод выращивания и уже развивающегося в почве растения, тщательно промыв корни в воде и аккуратно распределив их в субстрате
At the initial stage, the substrate in which the bulbs of hippeastrum grow is periodically moistened from above with a nutrient solution prepared according to the instructions for the selected fertilizer for hydroponics. This watering is continued until the bulb releases a powerful root network or the plant adapts after transplanting. As soon as the rhizome is formed or the hippeastrum starts to grow again, feeding is started using the standard method, pouring the hydroponic solution into an external container or flasks for auto-irrigation and maintaining the recommended level according to indicators. During the entire active development of the hippeastrum, they need a standard level of moisture. Thanks to the hydroponic method, the plant receives as much moisture as it needs, without excess.
After the luxurious flowers fade and the hippeastrum have completed their flowering period, they will begin a stage of relatively dormancy, or preparation for flowering. The flower stalks must be cut to the base, and the plants that store nutrients and grow bulbs for the next year should be kept in bright light and warm, maintaining a standard level of nutrient solution. In the summer, hippeastrum, adorned with bunches of narrow dark leaves, can be transferred to the garden.
From August, a period of complete dormancy begins, a stage in the development of these bulbous plants that is decisive for successful flowering. During the next 3-4 months, the hippeastrum is not fed, only maintaining light moisture by periodically moistening the top of the substrate with clean water or pouring a minimum amount of water onto the bottom of the hydro-vessel. The earthen coma must not be allowed to dry completely. As the leaves wilt, they are removed. After the expiration of the period of complete "rest", the nutrient solutions are again used in the usual dosages. The bulbs gradually wake up and by winter the hippeastrum again release luxurious flower stalks.
