Gardenia is a thermophilic, moisture-loving, flowering plant up to 1 meter high. Gardenia is native to the subtropical forests of China and Japan. This plant pleases both with its shiny, as if varnished leaves, and large white flowers with a cream shade, the buds of which in their shape resemble swirling candles. The flowering period for gardenia lasts a long time - from July to October. In addition, its flowers exude a pleasant aroma. Gardenia varieties with double flowers are especially popular with florists.

However, gardenia is a rather capricious plant, it does not relate well to sudden temperature changes, drafts and can adapt for a long time in a new place. Gardenia responds well to pruning, with which the plant can be shaped to the desired shape. Pruning is usually done in early spring before replanting or after the plant has faded. The gardenia of some combs stretches up to a meter in height. You can try to make small standard trees from such plants. To do this, a support is placed next to the stem (for example, a bamboo lattice) and all lateral shoots are gradually cut off. When the main stem reaches the desired length, the apical bud is pinched off, and with the help of lateral shoots, a spherical crown is formed in the plant.

Temperature: The temperature in summer can be between 22-25 degrees. In winter - preferably 14-17 degrees.

Lighting: A brightly lit place is great for gardenias, but the light should be diffused. You should not put the pot with the plant in a place where it will constantly be in direct sunlight.

Watering: During active growth, in spring and summer, gardenias require a lot of moisture, however, care must be taken to ensure that moisture does not stagnate in the soil. In winter, watering is reduced.

Humidity: Gardenia leaves require frequent spraying, but during this procedure, care must be taken that large drops of water do not fall on the flowers of the plant.

Soil: For gardenia, a mixture of equal parts of coniferous land, turf, peat and sand is suitable. Twice a month you need to add lemon juice to the water for irrigation - a few drops per 1 liter.

Top dressing: Gardenia responds well to regular top dressing with compound fertilizers added to the water for irrigation, exactly in accordance with the instructions. Feeding is carried out in spring and summer.

Transplant: Gardenia is a rather capricious plant, capable of dropping all the buds even from a simple turn of the pot on the windowsill, therefore, the plant is transplanted only if it has grown strongly and the pot has become small for him.

Reproduction: Propagate gardenia by rooting cuttings. The easiest way to get green or lignified cuttings is by pruning the plant. They are rooted in greenhouses at high humidity and at a temperature of 22-25 degrees. It is best to root cuttings in spring.

Flowering: Gardenia blooms in summer and blooms until late autumn.
