Gaillardia is a beautiful, drought tolerant plant native to North and South America. In total, there are 24 types of Gaillardia, among which there are annuals, biennials and perennials. Inflorescences are simple, semi-double and terry. Semi-double inflorescences are formed by two or three rows of reed flowers around the circumference and small tubular in the center. Terry consists of overgrown tubular, which have a funnel-shaped shape. The color of flowers can vary from yellow to orange, red, red-brown, bronze, often two-colored.
In this article, we will tell you about Gaillardia "Lollipap bicolor", a perennial plant with filled double inflorescences up to 7 cm in size and 35 cm in height.
Where to plant Gaillardia Lollipup?
The flower prefers sunny locations with light, dry soil and needs minimal watering. Since Gaillardia "Lollipup" is a short plant, it is suitable for use as:
- curb plant;
- for the foreground of the mixborder;
- for growing on a rocky hill (rock garden);
- for balcony boxes;
- for cutting;
- dry for bouquets in floristic compositions.
Growing Gaillardia in the open field
If you do not want to spend energy on growing flower seedlings, then sow the seeds immediately into open ground, 2 seeds at a distance of 25 cm from each other. Perennial Gaillardia can be grown this way from July to September, depending on your region. Keep in mind that seedlings will appear in about 2 weeks. You do not need to cover the seeds with earth. During the season, ten to fifteen leaf plates will appear on the seedling.
Before the first wintering in young plants, all leaves must be cut off completely flush with the soil surface. After that, they should be covered with dry foliage or covered with spruce branches. Flowering can be seen in spring. You don't need to cover the plant for the next winter. It is necessary to cover Gaillardia annually only if it is cultivated in an area with little snow and frosty winter periods.
The flowering of Gaillardia lasts more than 8 weeks, but in order for it to be even longer, it is recommended to promptly cut off the inflorescences that have begun to fade. Also, this flower must be fed 3 times per season, for this use a full complex fertilizer.
Top dressing is carried out during the appearance of buds, during the flowering period, as well as in the autumn, about 4 weeks before the cold sets in. Remember that it is forbidden to use manure for feeding. This plant does not tolerate any organic fertilizers.
Gaillardia "Lollipup two-color" is presented in an exclusive collection of flower seeds and spicy Provencal herbs from the best European breeders DARIT.
