Hedges are not only important structural and protective objects. They create a canvas for garden landscaping, add completeness and integrity to projects, and emphasize style. Regular or trimmed hedges and walls are considered the most economical in terms of the area occupied by the hedge and the most expressive.

Luxurious textures of a flawless surface have not gone out of fashion since they have become a constant attribute of the design of luxurious European parks and palace gardens. They look spectacular, but they require constant care and thorough care, they will not forgive mistakes and negligence. And success largely determines the correct choice of crops.
Let's take a closer look at the best plants for creating strict hedges:
1. Yew
Compact, arboreal with a very dense crown of whorled branches, slow-growing and easily propagating, yews are among the most accessible and adaptable conifers. Juicy green color, perfectly flat and very dense hedge surface and impeccable appearance are their main advantages. Yews are distinguished by their rather intensive growth, good resistance to diseases and pests, and practically minimal maintenance of the created green fence.

Green hedges are created from yew with a height of 1 meter. Of all types of yew for hedges, they prefer to use berry yew and its numerous varieties and forms, which are selected, focusing on the height of the plants and the desired color of the hedge.
Prerequisites for yews
Yews are considered the most shade-tolerant of conifers and the most suitable for forming hedges. They are able to put up with both a strong shadow and brighter lighting, but they reach the greatest decorative effect in partial shade of varying intensity (they lose frost resistance in the sun, but grow faster, in the shade - vice versa).
Yews are best planted in protected areas, so they will retain the beauty of the crown, even due to difficult winters. Soil for berry yew is suitable for any of the fairly loose, not waterlogged, at least moderately fertile.
Yew is planted at a distance of about 50 cm between plants in trenches up to 70 cm deep, when planting, the root collar should remain at soil level. Full mineral fertilizers must be applied to the soil, after a year the plants are fed again. It is advisable to mulch the soil. Young yews are watered monthly before the hedge closes, sprinkling and loosening the soil to a depth of 15 cm are carried out.

Specificity of pruning yew
During the first 1-2 years, it is better not to prune, then the formation begins by pruning 1/3 of the length of the branches. First, you need to control growth and form dense lower tiers and only then allow the yew to grow in height.
It tolerates heavy pruning and frequent haircuts and produces very dense green walls. Since yews are shade-tolerant, hedges can be given not only trapezoidal, conical, rounded, but also a strict rectangular shape. This is one of the best crops to experiment with original contours.
