Alyssum sea, or stonemason (Alyssum maritimum). Cabbage family - Brassicaceae. The genus Alyssum unites about 100 species. Most of them grow wildly in the Mediterranean countries, often in dry rocky places, which is why the name "stone" is connected.

A compact plant up to 10 cm high. Alyssum's bush is densely branched with oblong matte green leaves. Flowers are collected in a racemose inflorescence. The color of the petals is white or purple. They emit a strong honey aroma that is constantly felt.

Blooms from July to September, profusely. The seeds do not ripen immediately and are able to crumble. Therefore, it is better to collect them several times. Seed germination lasts up to 3 years.

The plant is unpretentious to the soil, cold-resistant, light-loving. Easily tolerates drought, but does not tolerate waterlogging.

The cultivation technique is simple. Seeds are sown in early spring directly into the balcony boxes. The soil requires light, nutritious and low lime content. It is recommended to sow shallow (0.5 cm) and compact the soil slightly. Seeds germinate on the 5-6th day. Thinning is required. The distance between plants after thinning is 10-15 cm. It blooms in 30-40 days after seed germination. When propagating by seedlings, seeds are sown in nests at the end of April. The prepared seedlings are planted in balcony boxes at the end of May with a distance of 15 cm between plants. To bloom more abundantly, the side shoots are pruned.

When grown on balconies, the plant takes on an ampelous shape, so it should be placed along the outer edge of the box.
