Golden autumn … Roses in palisades are blushing. Cicadas ringing in the night. And the harvest from the garden smells like honey … Autumn is not only harvesting honey apples and pears, making juices and jams, it is also preparation for the next year. And the future harvest depends on how carefully, correctly and timely it will be carried out. Very often, a carelessly prepared garden does not survive the winter well, which adds work in the spring during the planting period. Lack of time for spring work leads to increased damage to the garden by diseases and pests and the result is a low yield of poor quality, and even flavored with a large number of poisonous treatments. Thus, autumn is the head of the whole year.

Organization of harvesting autumn work in the garden

All autumn work must begin during harvest and end with the onset of the first frost.

Harvest. Remove carrion under the trees and send healthy fruit litter to compost for feed to livestock, birds, bury diseased plants away from the cottage or burn them.

Remove leaf fall under all trees. Healthy leaves can be used for digging by spreading a carpet over garden beds and other areas. Sick - remove and burn. You can create a special pit, where to dump sick foliage and other plant waste and treat them layer by layer with drugs for various diseases. The resulting humus (at least 3 to 4 years old) can be used as organic matter for lawns in recreation areas.

Scrape the bark with scrapers, clean the wounds and hollows. Before starting these works, spread an old cloth or film under the crown so that pests wintering in the crown do not fall on the ground. Disinfect the wound surfaces and treat with garden varnish. Carry out trimming.

Pruning in colder regions is best set aside until spring. This is due to the possibility of drying and freezing of the bark around the cut. In regions with short-term low temperatures, from autumn, after the leaves have completely fallen off, sanitary pruning is carried out, removing all curves, old dried branches affected by diseases. Do not forget to carry out anti-aging pruning on old trees after 3-5 years. The external manifestation of the need for such pruning is manifested in the attenuation of the growth and development of the top of the tree. Remove and incinerate all waste after trimming.

After the completion of the preliminary work on preparing the garden for wintering, work begins to protect against pests and diseases.

Measures to protect fruit from pests

Whitewashing of fruit trees

Whitewashing boles and skeletal branches is a mandatory measure to protect fruit from pests and diseases. Whitewashing compositions can be different and consist of one freshly slaked lime or a more complex mixture, which will contribute to the destruction of wintering pests, mycelium and spores of fungal and bacterial diseases, and protect from sunburn and frost breaks.

Whitewashing with clean fresh lime is ineffective. It is quickly washed off by rain and is only temporary protection from frost breaks and sunburn.

Recently, special (for garden trees) acrylic, water-based and water-dispersion paints have been on sale. They have good protective properties and are not washed off for a long time from treated tree surfaces. They contain an antiseptic. If the batch of paints has a liquid composition, you can add PVA or garden glue, but not carpentry glue. Wood glue clogs the treated surface with a continuous film, as a result of which the wood cannot breathe. With a dense consistency of the finished composition, no glue is needed.

Considering the cost of ready-made whitewash products, many gardeners prefer to make their own mixtures. The basis of all mixtures is fresh lime and clay in a 2: 1 ratio. For young seedlings, chalk is used so as not to burn the young bark. PVA glue, garden or special adhesives (you can buy) and additives to destroy wintering forms of pests and diseases are added to the mixture.

BI-58, copper sulfate, dichlorvos, DNOC and others are poisonous additives for pests. To destroy not only pests in the form of adults, larvae, but also fungal and bacterial infections, add fungicides "Hom" (30-40 g / bucket) or "Oxyhom" (20 g / bucket), fufanon. Freshly slaked lime is needed to burn off pests, lichens and mosses in egg-laying.

Installation of trapping belts

Fishing belts are usually made of straw. Treat it with any poisonous solution or powdery preparation and attach it to the bottom of the stem and skeletal branches using anti-caterpillar garden glue. The glue path is made with garden glue and the trapping belt is fixed. The glue does not freeze for a long time, and all creeping pests get stuck on it and in the belt. And they die. If the autumn is warm for a long time, the belt is replaced with a fresh one after 3-4 weeks, as well as in spring they are timely removed and replaced with new ones. Old belts must be burned.

Spraying the crown

After processing the trunk and skeletal branches, you need to process the crown of the fruit tree. The treatment is carried out by spraying with a 2 - 3% solution of copper sulfate or 3% Bordeaux liquid. You can use stronger drugs DNOC (1%) and nitrofen (3%) and others.

If pesticides are not used in gardening, they can be replaced with solutions of mineral fertilizers: urea (5%), ammonium nitrate (7%), ammonium sulfate (15%). For spraying, you can use a formulation 30B, formulated with oil.

Tillage

The last stage of the autumn protection of the garden from pests and at the same time diseases is the treatment of the near-stem circles.

If the garden is tinned, spraying is carried out in near-trunk circles or a continuous solution of urea (500 g / 10 l of water) or copper sulfate (7% solution). Spraying with a biological product oxyzin is effective.

If the soil in the trunks is in a state of steam. Then, at the end of all work, the soil is dug so as not to damage the roots. The shovel is placed along the roots and the digging is deepened from the trunk to the periphery of the crown from 5 to 15 cm in depth. The dug up soil is treated with a 7-10% solution of copper sulfate, 30B preparation, and other preparations. By the way, 30V is a good adhesive and can be added to whitewash solutions. Withstand 3-4 days, finely covered with a rake and mulch with a fine mulch with a layer of 5-10 cm. The pests remaining alive after tillage will begin to occupy the mulching layer and will die by spring. In the spring, the mulch is processed and dug up.

Rodent protection

Hares and mice bring big trouble to gardeners. Damaging the bark of young seedlings, they cause the death of young trees.

The main control measures are tying with conifers (spruce, juniper), roofing material. Installation of mesh-netting fences. The main thing when installing barriers and harnesses is to secure the lower part in the soil of the trunk circle. Poisoned mouse baits can be spread around. From small rodents in winter after snowfalls, snow should be trampled around the trunk.

When whitewashing trees in the autumn, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of carbolic acid to the whitewashing composition. Mice and hares are not suitable for such trees.

Implementation of the proposed measures in the preparation of fruit crops for winter will allow to destroy pests by 60-70% and preserve the garden.
