How to make a reservoir in the country?

To open a summer cottage "fish farm", the pond must be of optimal size. Then the fish will be able to winter well there, it will have enough space to swim, reproduce, and get food.

It is best to arrange a pond where the lowland of the site and the keys pass. You can first invite a well digging specialist who will tell you where is the optimal place.

The next step is to determine the size of the reservoir and its shape. If desired, it can be oval, round or curved. The most convenient way to denote this shape is to use a hose. Lay it on the surface of the soil, bending it as needed. Then it is necessary to dig in this place of marking with a shovel so that the shape of the future reservoir remains.

It is advisable to make the depth of the pond at least 2.5 meters. Experienced fish farmers say that over time, the shores sink, the depth decreases. One of my friends told me that his pond used to be 4 m deep, but over time it became only 2 m. However, his fish feels comfortable in such a reservoir.

The area of a summer cottage pond for fish farming must correspond to its quantity and species. On average, 10-20 carps or crucians per 1 cube of water. But if you want to breed such large fish as pike, catfish, count on a pond diameter of at least 10 m. For breeding ornamental fish, you can make a small reservoir - about 2 m in diameter.

When you decide on the size of the pond, you can call for help with heavy artillery. To dig a large pit, it is most convenient to hire an excavator with an appropriate machine, with the help of this technique you can quickly cope with the task.

In this case, decide in advance where you will put the excavated earth. Better to make the banks of the pond a little higher, so some of the free soil will be useful to you. But there will also be a surplus of soil that can be transported by truck outside the site.

You can also create an interesting landscape composition from the released soil. But it will be clayey or sandy. Therefore, it will subsequently be necessary to pour fertile soil on top in order to organize the composition in the form of a picturesque flowering slope or a high flower bed, an alpine hill with plants.

Usually at depth, the earth is clayey. Therefore, the bottom and banks of the pond will not crumble much. If you have sandstone, then it is advisable to strengthen these parts of the reservoir with a metal mesh with fine cells. You can concrete the banks and part of the bottom, but leave several areas free so that the keys spouting from the ground can function.

To create the best microflora, aquatic plants are planted in such a pond, as well as on its banks. They allow you to additionally strengthen the bottom and walls of the reservoir.

The fish house is ready. Now you need to decide which pets will live here.

The pond needs care too

Sometimes the water in the ponds starts to bloom. This is due to increased acidity. Therefore, during this period it is recommended to soak slaked or quicklime in a small amount of water in a bucket and scatter it over the surface of the water. Such a measure will also help prevent disease.

Wintering is one of the most important steps in pond and fish care. My neighbor in the country recalled that in the first year of fish breeding in late autumn, his crucians began to rise to the surface of the reservoir and greedily catch air. Then he did not know that this sign should immediately alert. Then the fish began to die en masse, and only roach and a small flock of crucian carp could survive the winter.

It turns out that several mature trees grew on the shore of his reservoir. In autumn, leaves flew from them in large numbers, which fell into the pond, gradually sinking to the bottom. Leaves need a lot of oxygen to decay, which they "take" from the fish. And the crucian carp just prefer to swim at the very bottom of the reservoir, and during this period they did not have enough air. Subsequently, a neighbor cleared the pond from decaying organic matter and launched new fish.

Therefore, when you set up a pond, it is better to place it where no trees grow. Or in the fall, you need to thoroughly clean the surface of the reservoir from leaves, before they have time to sink.

To provide fish with oxygen in winter, it is necessary to periodically make holes in the resulting ice crust for its access. You can additionally aerate the water with compressors in winter.

What kind of fish to get in the pond for beginners?

You can use one type of fish or several. But novice fish farmers should pay attention to the most unpretentious fish. For example, roach do not need a lot of oxygen to feel comfortable during the winter.

If you like carps, get them. You can purchase simple, mirrored, or both. Over time, some specimens will grow into large fish up to half a meter long. Crucian carps require more comfortable conditions, under which the fish also winters well.

Once you get the hang of it, you can run fry of other breeds too. But keep in mind that some fish are predators, they can simply eat their congeners in the workshop.

Carp and goldfish do not need to be fed in winter. Because of this, they are considered the most unpretentious fish. Therefore, summer residents without experience can be advised of these particular fish.

Where to get fry and fish for breeding?

Typically, fry are purchased from fisheries or specialized markets. In order to safely take them to the site, you need to prepare for this in advance. Take:

  • pumped up car camera;
  • a plastic bucket with a well-closing lid;
  • hose and spray to it;
  • pump tip.

The hose and spray are available from a hobbyist supply store. On the other side of this device, you will attach a tip from the pump, which can be fixed on the chamber nipple so that air flows into the bucket through the hose. Make two holes in the lid. Insert the end of the spray tube into one, and through the other hole the air will come out. Clip a small cut piece of hose into this hole.

It remains to pour clean settled water into this structure (into a bucket) and go for fry. When you take them home in a car, the air from the chamber will flow into the water, which is what small fish need.

If you were fishing with a net, used large fish, but remained small, run it into your breeding pond. But this must be done when the air temperature is not higher than +16 ° C.

Important. After the acquisition of fry or larger fish, they are kept in the same water in which they were transported before being assigned for permanent residence. They are waiting for it to gradually acquire the temperature of the water in the pond. Only after that, the fish are released into the equipped reservoir.

The subtleties of feeding fish

It is better to build a special feeder where you will place treats for your pets. You can take a regular plastic box with holes for vegetables, attach a synthetic rope in the center, tying a heavy metal bolt to its lower end. This is an impromptu anchor to keep the feeder in one place.

Fish eat white bread with pleasure. So don't throw away the crusts, but soak them, crush them and put them in a drawer.

You can also feed pets porridge, steamed chopped corn, prepared in the same way with legumes.

To make the fish nutrition in the pond balanced, you can advise the following "reference" recipe, which indicates the ratio of products:

  • chalk - 1 part;
  • fishmeal - 3;
  • wheat - 5;
  • barley - 6;
  • wheat bran - 10;
  • peas - 20;
  • cotton meal - 25;
  • sunflower meal - 30.

Feeding frequency depends on the season. In summer, fish require more food than in winter, when many of them are in a state of suspended animation.

For example, for baby carp weighing 0.5 g per day, you need as much feed as they weigh. And if individuals have gained weight from 500 g and more, then they are given 2.8% feed per day of their weight. Juveniles are given food 6-8 times a day, gradually reducing the feed as these fish grow. When the water in the pond is cool, the fish need less food.

If you decide to breed catfish, these fry need to be fed up to 8 times a day, as they grow older, reduce the frequency of feeding to 3 to 4 times a day.

But these norms apply to fry and to fish that you put into a recently dug pond. When a stable ecosystem is established in this reservoir over time, there will be practically no need for additional feeding. But you will need to periodically catch the fish with a net, make a control weighing in order to understand whether your charges are getting enough food.
