From early spring to late autumn, we live in the village, which allows us not only to grow various vegetables in the garden, but also to engage in poultry. We keep chickens, turkeys and broiler ducks in the poultry yard in the summer. If you live in a village and there is a reservoir nearby in your area, then it makes sense to think about raising ducks to provide your family with fresh meat. Ducks are relatively unpretentious, independent, and this poultry is slaughtered after 2 months. I will share my experience in raising broiler ducks in this article.

The main benefits of broiler ducks

Broiler poultry variations mean better quality and more meat. Broiler ducks are distinguished from classic breeds by faster growth, higher percentage of meat relative to fat, greater weight and improved taste. In addition, modern broiler ducks are distinguished by their unpretentiousness and high fertility.

It usually takes about half a year to feed a duck, but for broiler varieties this time is reduced to two months. This period is quite enough to get the maximum amount of meat per carcass. But if you keep broilers for longer, they, like ordinary breeds, begin to accumulate fat, the need for feed increases and the profitability of growing decreases. Due to the short period of keeping poultry before slaughter, two or three broods of ducks can be raised in one summer.

Broiler duck meat is of a more tender consistency, and at the same time it practically lacks the characteristic specific musky smell and taste of duck. Broiler ducks are subdivided into many crosses (hybrids), we prefer to raise Peking White ducks. Many modern crosses were later developed on its basis.

But the cost of the "Beijing White" ducklings is not high, the differences with more modern hybrids are not so fundamental, and it is very easy to find young animals on sale due to the great popularity of the breed.

The average weight of the Peking White duck at the time of slaughter reaches three to four kilograms. The breed is distinguished by pure white plumage, bright orange beak and orange-red feet.

In one season, we tried to add several mulard ducks to the "Beijing White". This broiler variety is a cross between domestic ducks and Indo-ducks. Externally, mulard is mainly distinguished by the presence of black markings on a white background.

However, this experience turned out to be negative. According to our observations, mulard ducks are not flocking birds and have no attachment to their yard. That is, if the Peking White ducks always kept together and returned home on their own after swimming in the open pond, then driving the mulard home was a big problem. In addition, the meat of mulard ducks seemed tough to us.

Buying and keeping broiler ducklings

We usually buy ducklings in late April or early May. At the same time, we take grown chicks at the age of 10-15 days, since they are already matured by this time and can be kept in outdoor conditions. In addition, at this age, the ducklings are transferred to a more varied feed.

Of course, there are also specialized compound feed for grown ducklings, but we do not use them. The main food for the ducklings: chopped fish, as well as various grain feeds - chopped corn, peas, wheat, barley, cake, etc. As a vitamin supplement, we use fresh herbs, boiled root vegetables and vegetables, for example, grated young zucchini or pumpkin mixed with grain.

Drinking bowls with sufficient water must be within reach of the ducks. Ducklings spend the night in the poultry house, where the temperature should remain at 18-20 degrees.

In healthy ducklings, about one month old, the soft yellow down begins to change to adult white plumage. It is very important that the ducklings receive adequate nutrition, since the bird's body spends about half of the nutrients supplied with the feed for the growth of feathers.

Features of keeping broiler ducks

Duck is a waterfowl, and broiler ducks are no exception. Therefore, ideally, they should also have constant access to water. We were lucky in this respect - there is a pond in the center of the village not far from the house. In addition, there is water in the meadow that runs through our site from spring to mid-summer. Thanks to this, our ducklings can practice swimming without leaving the fence, and adult ducks go to swim on their own in the pond.

If the reservoir is not in your yard, then young ducks (upon reaching 20-25 days of age) are “taken on an excursion” to a water source for several days in a row, and after bathing they are driven home and generously fed. Soon the ducks get used to their yard and, getting hungry, return home in a flock, and then go back to the water.

This can happen from one to several times a day; at night, ducks also almost always come home themselves. But sometimes they decide to spend the night on the pond, and they have to be called into the yard on their own.

At the same time, keep in mind that sometimes the local administration is against visiting open water bodies of the village by poultry and may impose a fine on the owners of the bird. Also, ducks on free grazing risk falling prey to predators - martens or foxes wandering into the village, as well as birds of prey, but, fortunately, we have not had such incidents.

Ducks need a shelter in the form of a poultry shed for the night. On the floor there is a layer of straw or sawdust 10-15 centimeters thick, which is replaced as it gets dirty. As a disinfection, a thin layer of fluffy lime is first poured onto the floor. Also, the house must be securely closed and not have wide gaps to prevent nighttime predators. In addition, it should be free of drafts and dampness. Ducks go for the night at sunset; it is best to release them into the fresh air with the first rays.

Ducks know their yard well, so it is not necessary to build a fence for them without the need. It is best to give the ducks a place where they will have access to water, and where shrubs or trees grow, in the shade of which birds can hide in the midday heat (for this purpose, you can build a canopy). Chickens may well be the neighbors of the ducks, but our ducks successfully shared the territory with the turkeys.

Feeding broiler ducks

When ducks freely visit reservoirs, the bird gets some of its food on its own. In rivers and ponds, ducks willingly eat duckweed, algae, aquatic insects, tadpoles, larvae and small fish. However, if such a diet is enough for wild birds, then broiler ducks on such a diet will most likely not gain sufficient weight. Therefore, they receive their main food from the owner.

Broiler ducks are fed on average 4 times a day, the feed is added as they are eaten. The main diet of ducks in our farm is chopped fish (it is better to extract large bones). In second place is a mash, which can consist of various cereals (chopped corn, barley, wheat, peas, etc.), chopped greens (quinoa, nettle, beetroot and carrot tops), boiled vegetables (potatoes, carrots), raw grated vegetables (pumpkin, carrots, zucchini, you can also grated apple), you can add a little bone meal and cake.

All ingredients are mixed with a little water until crumbly. The liquid and sticky mash is dangerous for ducks as it can clog the airways. Ducks drink a lot, so they should always have clean water available.

Poultry farmers have empirically established that the optimal time for slaughtering broiler ducks is 60-70 days of a bird's life. By this age, the weight of a duck usually reaches three kilograms. After this period, the ducks not only begin to accumulate fat, a second molt occurs. This makes it much more difficult to pluck the carcass, as the feathers form tough hemp. Duck down is soft and suitable for making pillows or blankets.

As for the taste of broiler duck meat, it really can be described as tender and really tasty. Most people associate duck with coarse, fibrous, fatty meats with a specific flavor. But anyone who tastes broiler duck forgets these stereotypes.

Sometimes we treat our guests to a meat dish, offering them to guess what kind of meat they have tasted. And, in fact, no one has yet been able to identify a duck in the offered dish. But at the same time, everyone noted the very high taste of meat and were really surprised that duck can be so tasty and lean.
