Among the huge variety of dog breeds, there is, in my opinion, a special one - the Central Asian Shepherd Dog, or Alabai. Its history is so ancient that it deserves special attention, and the qualities are so positive that they make you admire. Once in the family, Alabai not only becomes its full member, but also shares responsibility for the house. However, with many positive qualities, this breed requires a conscious attitude. You need to be ready to acquire such a dog, to understand in advance that it differs significantly from other breeds, not only in matters of education, but also in thinking.

A little about the breed

Alabai, or Tobet, does not belong to the breeds that appeared as a result of artificial selection. This is an aboriginal dog originally from Central Asia. Long used for grazing livestock, it has the qualities of a reliable guard and a wise shepherd. Has a strong, balanced character. Strong immunity. Differs in high affection for the owner.

It is believed that Tobet was formed in natural "selection" for about six thousand years and took the best in itself. You can often hear that it is called "Kazakh wolfhound", "Turkmen Alabai", however, a breed called "Central Asian Shepherd Dog" is registered.

At the withers, the Alabai reaches at least 70 cm - the male, and 65 cm - the bitch. Having an impressive size, it is distinguished by high grace, gentle movements and a calm disposition. He has a massive head, wide chest. The neck is muscular of medium length. Straight, broad, muscular back. Smooth legs and strong bones. Thick, straight coat and well developed undercoat. Color can be anything except black-backed, blue and brown.

According to its neuro-psychological characteristics, this is an intelligent, self-confident dog. Easily adaptable to the family. Calm about other pets. Gets along well with the children of his owners and with the guests of the house. Restrainedly treats strangers, showing protective qualities only in the event of an obvious threat. On walks does not react to small annoying dogs.

The main advantages of Alabai as a pet

In the city, due to its large size, Alabai can not be seen very often. But outside the city (in the private sector) this breed is loved. And if you have enough territory to keep such a large dog, then the following positive qualities of the Central Asian Shepherd Dog will help you to establish yourself in the choice:

  • Calm balanced disposition. Aggressive Alabai puppies are immediately discarded by a quality breeder. If we compare a dog and a bitch - the former are not subject to fussiness at all, bitches are more dynamic.
  • Friendliness by nature. The main thing when raising a Central Asian Shepherd puppy is not to confuse him with a German shepherd and deliberately not to awaken aggressiveness through games or training.
  • Very strong immunity. Laid by nature.
  • Reliability. Alabai does not just become attached to the owner. Being very intelligent, the dog always reacts correctly to his mood.
  • Excellent security qualities. Alabai dog does not bark just like that, only if it really feels danger.
  • Calm attitude towards temporary loneliness. At the same time, the tobet loves to spend time with his family and responds perfectly if periodically (during street maintenance) he is allowed into the house.
  • Alabai requires practically no training, only the education of basic skills.
  • Inexpensive content. Despite its impressive size, with the right diet, it eats little and does not need any special feed.
  • If the Alabay is regularly walked, he does not shit on his territory. If there is no possibility of regular walks (with prolonged bad weather), he goes to the toilet in one specific place.
  • Doesn't need very careful maintenance. Only feeding, walking, combing, vaccinations.
  • It tolerates well any weather conditions.
  • Does not have a strong odor.

How to choose a good Central Asian Shepherd puppy?

If you decide to purchase an Alabai puppy, buy it only from a reliable breeder - this will ensure the purity of the breed and become a guarantor of the health of the purchased dog. Take a dog with registration documents for the same reasons.

I advise you not to get a puppy that is too small - less than two months old - he must be vaccinated before getting into a new home.

Consider the gender of your pet in advance. Males are balanced, calm, attack unexpectedly in case of danger. Bitches are less self-confident, more mobile, rarely attack in case of danger, preferring to stand in the way and bark.

Consider the potential aggressiveness of the breed. You should calmly take a piece of meat from the mouth of an alabai puppy. If not, such a dog should not be taken into the family. Sooner or later, she can behave aggressively even towards the owner.

When choosing an Alabai puppy, be sure to evaluate its appearance and mood. A healthy puppy is active, has a shiny clean coat (in a purebred baby it will be short, plush, if long - there is an admixture in the breed), eats with appetite. A puppy with potential leadership qualities will be the first (among its siblings) to react to a knock or your unexpected manifestations (for example, clapping hands).

Why will I never trade our Alabai for another breed

Our Alabai has been with us for 6 years. Over the years, he has shown himself to be a reliable friend, a loyal guard, and sometimes as the owner of the pack. In the yard, when choosing a place to rest, it is always located at the point from which the entire territory of the site is most visible. At the same time, he likes it to be higher - on a pile of sand, briquettes with hay.

When necessary, he will obediently sit in the aviary. But if he senses danger, a two-meter fence is not a hindrance for him. And he does not even need to accelerate, he overcomes such a height with a jump.

When our head of the family leaves for a long time, the dog periodically enters the house, sits in the center of the kitchen (this is the place where all children usually gather), lies down on the floor and calmly watches “his charges”. Until he is sure that everything is in order, it is impossible to kick him out into the street.

We often walk with our Alabai outside the village. Sometimes we see an amazing picture. A flock of sheep led by the main ram, seeing our pet, stops, raises their heads in his direction and stands as if spellbound. But only while he looks at them. As soon as the dog turns and walks, the sheep, as if on command, follow him completely synchronously. As soon as he stops again and turns his head in their direction, the herd again freezes and stands rooted to the spot. And so on until the shepherd scares the sheep.

In my opinion, although Alabai are not particularly amenable to training, the main teams should definitely be trained. This makes it easier to communicate with the dog outside the yard. She must know, at least, the basic commands - "place", "next to", "sit", "stand", "walk".

But even if you teach Alabai "excellently", at times your dog will test you: do you really want him to be so obedient or can you still relax and behave more freely? If you show that nobody canceled the rules, he obeys.

If I was offered today to take a dog of a different breed, I would never agree. In my opinion, Alabai is the best dog breed for suburban life. Since this is not just a dog - it is an intellectual who will always love you, will not cause any inconvenience and will become not just a reliable guard, but also a loyal friend for the whole family.
