Video: Pond-oriented Garden Design. Photo
Owners of very small gardens always face considerable problems in their design. And the point is not at all that many objects have to be abandoned altogether. The area of the garden does not allow to break up numerous flower beds and ridges; in the arrangement, it is necessary to carefully weigh every centimeter of the free area. In such gardens, the design idea, general concept and thoughtfulness of details play a special role and require very careful thought over each element. If a neat reservoir is laid out in a small garden, it automatically becomes the semantic center of the entire garden and its main pride and decoration. In such a garden, the design should be focused specifically on the water design elements.
If it was possible to equip a pond in the garden on a small area, it will invariably become the center of everyone's attention and its main decoration. And it will play the role of the semantic center of the garden, regardless of whether it is a strict, modern or landscape reservoir, and what efforts were made to equip bright flower beds and comfortable recreation areas. And if the pond will still dominate, then it is better not to try to shift the emphasis, but to profitably use the reservoir itself, equipping the site in such a way that it is oriented towards your favorite water garden. This is not so difficult to do. It is enough to competently use the limited space, choose a "water" color scheme and skillfully recapture the reservoir in the structure of the site.
Focus on pond design
Since the pond will dictate the design of the entire garden, special attention should be paid to its decoration. A water body that serves as a starting point in design must literally be brought to perfection. Even in the smallest pond, you can settle dwarf varieties of water lilies, use other aquatic plants whose growth is easy to control (for example, arrowhead subulate or arrowhead pontederia). Do not forget about the possibility of installing a fountain, a beautiful parapet or walkways, sculptures, walking paths, scrupulously approach the design of the coastline from approaches to the water to visual peaks in the form of shrubs and large perennials. Make sure that the pond looks not only attractive, but bright and stylish.
The structure of the garden, the design of which is oriented towards the reservoir, should be as simple as possible, bring the feeling of spaciousness and freedom of vision to the absolute. In order to profitably open the pond and make it the semantic center of the entire design, it is necessary to balance the free space and lush vegetation.
In small gardens, the best zoning option would be the concentration of plantings in the area of the pond itself and the arrangement of volumetric ridges and flower beds around the garden perimeter with a kind of frame, using them to create a luxurious and bright canvas. It is better to leave the center of the garden free by breaking a luxurious green carpet or a clearing of ground covers (even if the reservoir is located in the middle, surround it with a lawn that repeats the shape of the pond itself around the perimeter).
When placing recreation areas and planning a small vegetable garden or other objects with limited functionality, try to place them so that they act as "counterweights" to the reservoir itself, located diagonally on the opposite side of the garden (according to this principle, it is better to place furniture on the terrace).
The bet in the design of the garden, from its landscaping to the choice of materials, should be made on a calm and cool color palette, experiments with blue and other cold colors. Detached, harmonious and cool, such a palette will enhance the effect of the pond and allow you to achieve the effect of expanding the boundaries of the garden while enhancing the role of the reservoir, further emphasizing its style-forming function.
It is better not to overdo it with blue-colored plants: let the blue color be not dominant, but perceived as an accent and catchy "spots". Transform every plant or group of plants with a base color into bright decorating elements, highlighting them with greens and white, purple and purple colors, making the whole design more harmonious and festive. Feel free to complement the base color with unexpected contrasts, mix and experiment.
If you have the opportunity, repaint moans and fences, update or match appropriate garden furniture and wooden plant supports, and use textiles and accessories to highlight watery garden design ideas.
Lush ensembles to match the pond
When filling flower beds and flower beds, give preference to plants that will create colorful, but calmly harmonious compositions that can support the aquatic design theme with their aesthetics. Bells, oak sage, delphiniums, erythematosus, gentian, brunner, asters, horned violet, aquilegia, decorative bows, lupins, sage, veronica, bells, lavender, winding trellises and other supports clematis, placed as an accent and trimmed "Connector" decorative deciduous plants will help to create expressive, but very voluminous compositions.
In such a garden, the most expressive and textural plants will look great, from majestic hosts and musical cereals to an airy cuff, a tireless periwinkle, fanciful heucheras, shining in the company of blue-colored plants with precious metals of crops with silvery foliage - wormwood, wormwood, etc.
Do not forget about the continuous flowering and seasonal accents: magnificent bulbs from muscari to scilla, hyacinths and pansies and bright annuals from petunias and lobelias to ageratum and morning glory will help fill the garden with cheerful carelessness and at the same time highlight the chosen range. Stone flower beds and lawns, plinths and supports add vertical expression and structural perfection to any flower garden.
There is never too much water fun
It is advisable to "recapture" the pond in at least one place in the garden - to introduce another water body to enhance the atmosphere. This can be a miniature fountain on the terrace, a wall fountain, a portable pond in a decorative container, or ordinary rainwater collection tanks that can be turned into a small decorative masterpiece thanks to complaints located at different levels, or even a simple transparent vase filled with water with floating candles on the table. Such small water bodies will create a cozy atmosphere, but their main purpose is to enhance the role of the pond and bring harmony to the design, emphasizing the water theme.
