The most difficult and time-consuming lawn care has always been mowing. Whatever type of lawn we are talking about, regular, systematic procedures carried out in accordance with all the rules are the key to success. They provide not only the impeccable texture and visual appeal of an emerald carpet, but they are also an important means of preventing lawn problems. You have to spend a lot of energy on a haircut, but sometimes even a single skip of this procedure can lead to big problems. Edge maintenance should not be forgotten when mowing your lawn: perfect lawn edges are not created or preserved by themselves.

Lawn mowing tasks and helpers in solving them

Procedures that are more important than regular mowing for the health and beauty of the lawn simply cannot be found. It is thanks to systemic mowing that a dense and strong sod is formed, in which the grasses actively develop and bush, are able to withstand negative factors, including moss and weeds. Problems with a lawn that is mowed regularly are much less common. But any mistakes with a haircut will lead to troubles much more significant than mistakes in any other type of green carpet care.

The season for mowing on the lawn in the middle zone and regions with severe winters traditionally covers the warmest period of the year - from May to the end of September-October. Where winters are less harsh, and spring and autumn allow for more active work, haircuts start earlier and finish later. But it is better to make it a rule to complete the mowing of the lawn as soon as the first autumn cold snap comes and not to start it earlier than before the grass stand has risen to a height of 8 cm.

The first and foremost rule of lawn mowing, which should not be violated under any circumstances (and the only guarantee that the lawn will look perfect) is the regularity of procedures, even in extreme circumstances. Long intervals or non-systemic procedures, with uneven periods between mowing, will cause the lawn to lose its attractiveness, damage the turf and increase nutrient consumption from the soil.

Mowing when possible, from time to time for lawns is unacceptable. If you can't keep your emerald carpet mowed regularly, then look for an easier-to-maintain lawn alternative.

Traditionally, cutting is done by cutting off about 3 cm of grass. The grass should not overgrow, and as soon as it rises to a height of approximately 8 cm, the next mowing must be carried out. If the grass rises higher, then it will be difficult to cut off all the "excess" in one cut, and the development of taller grass will affect both the density of the sod and the depletion of the soil.

Before designing your own treatment schedule, think about how you can simplify the process of regularly cutting green carpets. To make an inevitable and very time-consuming duty one pleasure, you cannot do without garden equipment. A reliable and comfortable mower makes mowing fun even on large areas. Only on very small lawns can you cope with the mowing task manually, with the simplest tools.

For large and medium-sized lawns, there is a huge range of equipment, which differs both in cost and in capabilities. The choice of self-propelled, mechanical, electric and gasoline lawn mowers allows you to find the optimal solution. When choosing a lawn mower, be sure to take into account noise characteristics, the ability to work on difficult terrain, the presence of a mulching function, the ability to adjust the cutting height.

To handle hard-to-reach parts of the lawn, you will need special scissors or a brushcutter (garden trimmer), which can be either electric or gasoline, but any of them always requires extreme caution in the work.

Regularity of procedures

The frequency of regular lawn mowing procedures is usually set taking into account the activity of the grass development and the type of grass mixture, but on average it is worth focusing on the optimal mowing frequency once a week when it comes to a regular garden and park lawn. Sports lawns, as well as decorative lawns, are cut slightly differently, based on the indications of the mixture manufacturer and the type of lawn. But for ordinary garden lawns, the frequency of mowing should not be too infrequent and not too frequent, so that constant mowing does not oppress the lawn, but supports and stimulates its development.

The estimated frequency must be corrected depending on the weather. In wet weather, the grass develops more actively, which means that it is necessary to mow the lawn more often, with pauses between procedures of only 5 days. But in dry weather and with strong heat, it is better to increase the frequency between mowing, to carry out one haircut every 8-9 days. If the grasses develop actively, at the very beginning of the season there is a rapid growth of sod, then from mid-May to the end of June, the lawn can be cut even 2 times a week.

An even more important issue is the cutting height. Cutting too low can lead to the fact that the sod becomes not only vulnerable to weeds, but also to diseases, infections, and if the cut is low in spring or autumn, the sod can even die. The optimum height for all garden lawns is considered to be a mowing of 4-4.5 cm. This is the minimum height of grass that can be left during this procedure in the high season.

On weakened lawns, during the first procedures in May-June and during the last haircut, it is necessary to leave the grass above, at least 5 cm (the optimal indicator is 5.5-6 cm) and adhere to the standard indicators from the third to fourth to the penultimate haircut.

When adjusting the cutting height, it is also better to take into account the weather, in drought and heat, leaving grass stands up to 6 cm high. The type of lawn is also of great importance. In summer, the parterre lawn is cut to a height of 3 cm, in spring and autumn - by 4 cm. Sports lawns are cut to a height of 2 cm and more.

If, as a result of your absence, you still allowed the grass to grow, missed one or several haircuts, then in no case should you mow the lawn as usual. Grass with a height above 10-15 cm is first shortened by exactly half, and only during the following procedures are they lowered to the optimal height. The same technique is used in the spring, if the first haircut was missed and the lawn grew above 8 cm.

There are a few more secrets to mowing lawns:

  1. For a flawless finish, remember to change the direction of your haircut. The more varied you mow the grass, the less the uniformity of the movements from mowing to mowing, the better the results will be achieved. Make it a rule to move perpendicular to the direction in which you mowed the lawn last time while mowing. With this simple trick, you will prevent stiff, thick stems from forming in the turf, which will ruin your stand and turn it into a “washboard”.
  2. Always start mowing on rectangular lawns from the narrower sides. But on lawns of a round or irregular shape, they first move along the contour, and then - from the middle or the most extended place to the edge in parallel movements, stripes.

Only a lawn with flawless edges looks beautiful. A lined edge or border around a green carpet is just as important to its attractiveness as flawless care. And even if edging or trimming the edges is a purely aesthetic procedure (except for the threat of the sod spreading onto flower beds), you should also not forget about it.

There are several options for leveling the edge of your lawn and keeping it in perfect shape:

  1. Regular pruning.
  2. Border edging.
  3. Bedding under flower beds with perennials covering the transition is a rare and not the most effective method that does not remove the need to manually correct a sprawling lawn.

The easiest way to keep your lawn perfectly framed is to use a curb. Even a simple curb made of "recessed" clinker or cobblestones dug into the soil will not allow the lawn to grow, limit its area and level the edge. If desired, more complex options can be used as a border, choosing the style and materials of the border in accordance with the style of the garden.

After all, the range is not limited only to ready-made stone curbs or cast concrete sides, but combined paving, a picket fence made of logs, fashionable steel strips or even plastic sides are also used. Do not forget about filling with gravel or mulch as a "transitional" option.

Manual trimming of edges is the most difficult and time consuming. Sod trimming will have to be done several times a year, and this work cannot be called simple. The lawn is manually leveled using a shovel or crescent hoe, working along the long planks laid along the edge.
