Usually, the bulk of flowering annuals are sown from late February to April. However, there are also such annuals that, sown in early to mid-May, will easily manage to please us with their flowering. As a rule, these are cold-hardy, fast-growing, early flowering plants that can be sown directly into the ground. Moreover, they are absolutely unpretentious! I will talk about such express annuals, which, unfortunately, are not so often found in our gardens, in this article.

1. Hanging resin

Smolevka is a very extensive genus in which you can find, for example, cushion perennials for rock gardens. And even the well-known meadow plant with the popular name "cracker" is also a resin. But there are also annuals that can decorate flower beds. Most often, the sale can be found in seeds campion povisloj (Silene pendula). It is a low-growing plant that forms branchy bushes that do not exceed 20 centimeters in height.

Its stems are reddish, creeping, ascending, small oval leaves, both stems and leaves, have small sticky hairs (pubescence). The drooping resin is usually sold in a mixture of colors. Most often, she has white flowers of various shades of pink and lilac with a white center.

In shape, a single flower resembles verbena or phlox and consists of five petals, each of which has a small dissection (in the form of a narrow heart). The shape of the flower is nail-like, its diameter is up to one centimeter. Such flowers are collected in racemose, slightly drooping inflorescences.

Growing features

This flower is often recommended to be grown through seedlings, sowing seeds indoors in April so that flowering begins as early as possible. But resin is a cold-resistant annual that can be sown directly into the ground. When sown in early May, flowering will begin in July and continue until September.

Sowing is carried out in a small groove (about 1 centimeter deep), after spilling it well with water. After sowing the seeds evenly, it is better to cover them with compost or purchased peat-based soil. Seedlings are thinned out at a distance of 15 centimeters.

Hanging resin is grown in open sunny places, since in partial shade the plant will stretch and flowering will be weak. The soil must be sufficiently fertile, neutral or slightly acidic, and good drainage is essential. The plant is drought tolerant, but watering is necessary in dry times. Top dressing - once a month with a solution of complex mineral fertilizer.

Hanging resin is very rarely found in gardens and is completely in vain, because this is a bright and cheerful plant that can become a worthy decoration of the foreground of a flower garden. And when grown in balcony boxes and hanging baskets, it behaves like an ampelous plant and can be combined with petunia.

2. Leptosiphon (beads)

A very unusual annual, resembling moss, unexpectedly covered with a scattering of colorful flowers. The flowers of Leptosiphon are tiny, less than 5 millimeters, and they consist of 5 petals. Coloring is presented in several colors: yellow, raspberry, white and pink. At the base of the petals in the center of the flower there are usually contrasting spots.

The flowers rise above moss-like green curtains on long, thin peduncles. The resemblance to moss in this plant is due to thin needle-shaped leaves sitting very close to each other, and the tiny growth of creeping clumps - only up to 10-15 centimeters.

It is better to grow Leptosiphon on poor, infertile soils, since on rich soils the appearance of the plant does not change for the better - the flowering becomes not so abundant, and in general, decorativeness is significantly lost.

Growing features

The place of the exposition must be necessarily sunny and preferably elevated, but without stagnant rainwater. It is a cold-resistant and fast-growing plant, so it can be sown both indoors in April and in May directly into the ground. In the second case, the soil must be prepared, and if there is heavy soil in the garden, replace the top layer with light sandy loam.

Since the seeds of Leptosyphon are very small, even in open ground they are sown superficially. To protect crops from heavy rainfall, it is better to cover such a "school" with a film or non-woven material at first. Weed seeds are usually the earliest to sprout in garden soil, which can drown out tiny Leptosyphon seedlings. Therefore, until the flower grows, regular weeding is required.

It is better to sow leptosyphon immediately in the place where it will subsequently grow, since the plant does not tolerate transplanting well, and the extra seedlings can then simply be removed. The flower gives good self-seeding, but this way not all the colors that bloomed last season are reproduced.

It is best to sow this flower in several steps, since its flowering is wave-like. Blooming in June, the peak of flowering of beads occurs in July, after which a period of calm begins. By autumn, flowering resumes, but it is weaker.

3. Nemophila

Delicate annual plant with creeping shoots and pretty carved leaves. Height of plant mat of nemofily (Nemophila) does not exceed 15 centimeters. The main decorative value of the plant is represented by flowers with a diameter of 3-4 centimeters. Despite the fact that the flowers are medium-sized and single, this plant blooms very profusely.

The shape of a corolla, consisting of 5 petals, is similar to a garden geranium. The color of the corolla may vary depending on the variety. The most popular is Nemophila Menzisa blue, whose petals are of the most delicate sky-blue color, similar to forget-me-nots, and there is a pure white spot in the center of the corolla.

Also on sale you can find varieties: "Ladybug" (white with burgundy veins and dark dots on the edges of the petals) and "Penny Black" (maroon, almost black petals with a thin white border).

Growing features

Nemophila blooms from June for a month, and in autumn it can repeat flowering. Therefore, in order to observe its delicate flowers all summer long, sowing is carried out in 2 stages with an interval of about a month.

It is a fairly cold-resistant plant, and sowing can be carried out in a permanent place in the garden from May to June. The seeds are embedded in prepared soil without weeds and large clods of earth to a depth of 3-5 millimeters. In warm weather above 20 degrees, seedlings will appear in 10-15 days. If the temperature is lower, the germination of seeds may be delayed.

In the future, the seedlings are thinned out at a distance of 5-10 centimeters from each other. Nemophila prefers fertile, well-drained soils. The landing site can be either sunny or partial shade. Regular watering is required, and once a month you can feed the plant with a full mineral fertilizer.

Nemophila looks best in the foreground of natural-type flower beds, can also be planted in a curtain at the foot of a tree-shrub group, is good in rock gardens, carpet flower beds and as a container plant. A small self-seeding can be expected next year.

4. Feverfew

This cute chamomile is widely known for its medicinal and insecticidal properties. Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is a short-growing variety of this flower, 20-25 centimeters high. The main part of the inflorescence of varietal pyrethrum is occupied by central tubular flowers, and there are very few extreme ligulate flowers, so the inflorescence-basket of pyrethrum looks like a small ball or pompon. The color can be classic chamomile - yellow center and white edge, or solid yellow.

For example, the pyrethrum variety "Golden Ball" has a bright yellow color, and the reed flowers are completely absent, due to which such a daisy ball looks especially original. The diameter of the inflorescence is 2.5-3.5 centimeters. The leaves of maiden feverfew are feathery, but not very dissected and in appearance are similar to the foliage of chrysanthemums. The bush is branched, but does not grow too wide.

Growing features

You can sow feverfew indoors in April, late autumn before winter, or in May immediately to a permanent place. The seeding depth is no more than 3 millimeters. Seedlings appear in 10-15 days. In the future, they will need to be thinned out to a distance of 15-20 centimeters.

The landing site should be sunny or slightly shady. Feverfew is a cold-resistant plant and its seedlings can withstand slight short-term frosts. Adult plants remain in bloom even at -3 … -4 degrees, so pyrethrum will bloom until late autumn.

The plant prefers the soil to a moderately fertile neutral or alkaline reaction. You can feed him once a month. To stimulate flowering, it is recommended to trim the bushes and feed them. For better branching, it is better to pinch young seedlings. If the faded flowers are not cut off in time, then feverfew will give self-seeding.

Looks good in the foreground of a flower garden in combination with snapdragons, petunias, marigolds and other plants. Grows well in containers on the balcony. From cut flowers, you can make a small bunch that will stand in a vase for a very long time or use as a dried flower

5. Phacelia

A popular plant well known to gardeners as a green manure and beekeepers as a wonderful honey plant. Florists would also not hurt to pay more attention to individual representatives of this genus. For example, phacelia campanulate (Phacelia campanularia) has a noticeable and touching appearance.

She has rather large, up to 3 centimeters in diameter, flowers of a very rare true blue-indigo shade, from which large yellow anthers peep out on long stamens. The flower shape is bell-shaped. The height of the bushes is 15-20 centimeters, the stems are creeping, rising.

Pourchot Phacelia (Phacelia purshii) differs from the bell-shaped, above all, sizes, and it's pretty tall plant from 30 to 60 sentiment high. The flowers are 4 centimeters in diameter, purple in color with a white spot in the center of the calyx.

Growing features

This is a very unpretentious plant. Phacelia can grow successfully on almost any soil, except for highly saline soils. The place must certainly be sunny and without stagnant water. Fertilize phacelia once during budding.

The flower is very difficult for transplanting, so it would be most optimal to sow the seeds immediately to a permanent place in the ground in early to mid-May. Seedlings will appear in about 5-10 days. Seedlings are thinned out at a distance of 10-15 centimeters from each other. Phacelia will start blooming in mid-June and last for about a month.

Phacelia is used in mixtures for the Moorish lawn, in the foreground of the flower garden, as a container plant, at the foot of tree and shrub groups, in rock gardens and natural flower beds.

The main disadvantage of these types of phacelia is short-term flowering. Therefore, it must be sown in several stages. However, this problem is partially offset by rapid growth and absolute unpretentiousness.
