Surely, many of you have met this plant, at least as a component of some cosmetic or food products. It is "disguised" under different names: "ziziphus", "unabi", "jujuba", "Chinese date", but all this is one and the same plant. This is the name of the culture that has long been cultivated in China, moreover, it was grown as a healing one, along with ginseng and eleutherococcus. From China, it was brought to the Mediterranean countries, and from there ziziphus began to slowly spread throughout the world. Today, ziziphus can be successfully grown even in central Russia. I will talk about the features of this process in the article.

Features of growing ziziphus

Many people believe that the Chinese date is an exclusively southern exotic and cannot be grown in a temperate climate. In fact, as practice shows, it copes well with the weather in Voronezh, for example. True, it grows so far only in the gardens of amateur gardeners, which is a pity. In addition to the medicinal properties, which will be discussed later, modern varieties of ziziphus have large oblong drupes (sizes up to 3x5 cm) with a peculiar sour-sweet taste.

It is not difficult to grow ziziphus in your area. It has a very powerful, deeply and widely spreading root system. Due to this, the plant is able to easily tolerate drought, undemanding to soil and fertilizers. Probably, you should not grow it only where the groundwater is too high.

At my site, I regularly watered ziziphus only for the first season, while the small seedling took root. Then, I gave up this business, it grows and bears fruit from the second year. True, it is believed that with watering the harvest is still larger and better.

Ziziphus grows from 3 to 8 meters in height, with curved, reddish young branches, over time, the bark turns gray. Leaves are oval, leathery, shiny, bright green, pleasant to the eyes, about 5 cm long.

But the flowers are pale yellow and very small, collected in small inflorescences of 3-6 pieces. Ziziphus blooms from mid-June to mid-August, so no frost is terrible for the flowers.

In winter, at rest, ziziphus calmly withstands frost down to -25 degrees, however, if you have a young grafted seedling, then in the first winter it is worthwhile to play it safe and either spud the grafting site with earth, or completely cover the seedling by making an air-dry shelter.

To do this, you need to build a rigid frame (put, for example, a large plastic bottle without a bottom) and cover it with earth or dry leaves. But, I repeat, this is already an extreme case, if you have severe frosts, and the zizyphus seedling is still small. In subsequent years, the need for shelter disappears.

Ziziphus formation

Ziziphus can be formed in different ways. Someone likes a bush, but someone likes a tree. If you decide to grow like a tree, then regularly remove all the shoots on the trunk, at a height of about 50-70 cm and leave 4-5 skeletal branches, which are evenly distributed in different directions.

In addition, thickening shoots growing inside the crown are regularly removed, and sanitary pruning is done in the spring.

Diseases and pests of ziziphus

He has not yet found any pests or diseases on the ziziphus, which means that he does not need to carry out any chemical treatments. Why is this good? That's right, environmentally friendly and healthy products.

Ziziphus is very fond of the sun. Therefore, choose a well-lit and warm place in the garden for planting. The planting hole is prepared, as for most fruit crops, allowing the seedling to take root well and grow. The mixture for filling the planting pit should be light, loose and nutritious.

In the southern regions, it is worth planting ziziphus seedlings in the fall, after the temperature drops, around the end of October – November. The heat is gone, it starts to rain - the seedling will take root well before the onset of frost. In the northern regions, it is better, more reliable, to plant in spring.

And here the zizyphus has one interesting quality, which becomes its advantage. He wakes up very late in the spring, in May. Many who come across this plant for the first time believe that the seedling died, did not survive the winter. Do not rush to despair, wait, most likely, he is alive, but the buds will wake up only in May, because the vegetation of the ziziphus begins at an average daily temperature of + 12 … + 14 degrees. Therefore, it can be planted and transplanted almost all spring.

Ziziphus is a cross-pollinated plant. And this is very important for a good harvest. On a lonely growing bush (tree), thousands of flowers are formed, but only a few of them will set fruit. Therefore, it is worth planting 2-3 plants, you can have one varietal, and the other - a seedling. With such a planting, you will find that the harvests of ziziphus can give very large - already in the third year up to 10 kg.

True, the berries of zizyphus ripen not at the same time, but throughout the autumn - from September to frost. In my opinion, this makes it easier to process them, because between the collection of harvest lots, you have time to learn what else to make of it.

Reproduction of ziziphus, or Unabi

The easiest way to start a ziziphus is, of course, to buy a ready-made seedling, but you can get its seeds and sow. Just remember that the seeds need stratification (long-term treatment with cold and moisture) in order for them to germinate.

Simply put, the seeds of ziziphus must be sown in a container in the fall, moistened and placed in a refrigerator, cellar or under a thick layer of snow. With the onset of spring, the container is placed in a warm place and await shoots.

True, with this method of reproduction, you will get a "wild plant" with not very large fruits (size about 2x3 cm, but you can eat) and with a large number of thorns (ziziphus is a thorny plant).

The seedling can be grafted with a good varietal cuttings. But this is not an easy task, and not everyone succeeds, but only experienced gardeners. The problem is that the wood of the ziziphus is very hard, it is not for nothing that they gave it another name - "iron tree". Budding will not work, only improved copulation, and with constant sharpening of the grafting knife.

So, if you want to have a plant with large and tasty fruits, then either look for an experienced grafting specialist, or look for a ready-made seedling. Although, try it yourself, what if you have a light hand and succeed?

The use of zizyphus in cooking and traditional medicine

Ziziphus fruits are used both fresh and processed. They can be dried in the sun, canned in the form of compotes and juices, marinated, made jam and even made wine. By the way, about wine - a glass of ziziphus compote helps a lot in the morning from a hangover. Apparently, this is due to its unique healing properties.

First and foremost, ziziphus is an ideal remedy for the treatment of hypertension, and the most neglected. To do this, you just need to have this plant in your garden (not necessarily varietal) and eat several fruits (either fresh or dried) every day. You can make a decoction of young leaves, this will also help with hypertension, and at the same time with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Ziziphus also has another name - "breast berry", which indicates its benefits for the treatment of colds of the upper respiratory tract. Detailed recipes are, of course, worth looking for on your own, I will not go too deep into this topic.
