Among the exotic fruits on supermarket shelves, there are also those that can be grown in our climate. And without much hassle, get a harvest of delicious fruits. Of course, it is important to understand here that the technological cultivation cycle will differ somewhat from the usual one, and not all varieties will fit. Today I will tell you about my experience of growing passion fruit - from seeds to harvest. No, this is not exactly the passionfruit that we serve, but it is its close relative. To be very precise, we will talk about the cultivation of Passiflora incarnata, or, as it is also called, meat-red passionflower, meat-red passionflower, apricot liana, or marakoka.

Preparing seeds for germination

The first thing to start with is, of course, to get some seeds. Fortunately, now this is not a problem - there are even special groups on social networks, a kind of forums where experts and amateurs exchange experiences and planting material.

Ripe marakoka seeds (let's call the crop so for brevity) are black, corrugated "washers" about 5 mm in diameter. They can be stored at room temperature and they do not need any stratification for germination. It is worth starting the germination process in February, then, most likely, you will have time to get the first harvest of these tasty and aromatic fruits.

As I said, the seeds do not need stratification, but scarification (to break the integrity of the outer shell) is worth it. Fine sandpaper, or a file, or a nail file will do for this. Each seed needs to be lightly rubbed over a rough surface, so we damage the thin outer shell and allow moisture to quickly get to the seed itself. Strongly, to holes, do not rub, just a little.

Such scarified seeds need to be soaked in water for 2-3 days. Traditionally, I take filtered water from a well, and not from a water supply system, and I change it a couple of times a day.

Germinating seeds

Seeds that have been saturated with moisture can already begin to germinate. And here is the attention! Maracoca seeds germinate at temperatures not lower than +30 degrees. This is really important. I wasted a lot of time and ruined some of the seeds, trying to germinate them at + 24 … + 25 ° C, standard for our crops. If you want to try the fruit of the marakoka this season, then it is unacceptable to waste time.

What to germinate? You can take a plastic container with a lid, fill it with peat or coconut substrate, sphagnum moss or even paper towels, but this substance must be constantly moist.

Where to get +30 degrees in February? Some people hang the container on the back of a working old model refrigerator (it is warm), some place it at the right height above the radiator, some use underfloor heating and cover it on top. In general, a thermometer will help you determine the right place.

A few days later, the already nailed seeds were carefully planted in containers in a standard commercial soil mixture for seedlings. Gradually the seedlings develop. Additional lighting will be useful during this period (late winter - first half of spring). By May, you will have grown up quite large seedlings, from half a meter to a meter. When the threat of return frosts has passed, after preliminary hardening, of course, they can be planted in open ground.

Taking into account our not very long summer, the place for landing should be chosen as sunny as possible and, preferably, protected from the north side. That is, the southern wall of a house or a barn is ideal. The planting hole was filled with a mixture of garden soil and compost. Watering is regular.

Keep in mind that the marakoka is a vine and needs space. To do this, I put a trellis 1.7 m high and pulled on an ordinary plastic net for cucumbers. Clinging with antennae, the liana gradually rises up, and if you have not lost time in the spring, then in June it begins to bloom.

Passionflower flowers are incredible, and marakoka is no exception. You can probably describe them using botanical terms, but it's better to see them once.

But we do not grow them for the sake of beautiful flowers (although there are some), but for the sake of fruits. And here one important feature comes into play. To obtain a crop, the flower needs to be pollinated with pollen from the flower of another plant. Therefore, you need to have several lianas nearby to get a guaranteed harvest.

Artificial pollination of marakoka flowers

Moreover, the first flowers appear out of order, and the flower lives only one day. It turns out - today it has bloomed on one liana, tomorrow - on another, the day after tomorrow - on the third, but there is no ovary, but time goes by … It doesn't matter, you can help with this plant - let's do artificial pollination.

At the moment when the flower blooms, relatively speaking, on liana No. 1, gently with tweezers or just fingers, we tear off the anthers with yellow pollen and put them in a jar with a lid, and put the jar in the refrigerator. Such pollen can retain its properties for a couple of weeks.

When, relatively speaking, liana No. 2 blooms, we take out the anther from the refrigerator and smear the pistil of the flower. Yellow pollen particles are clearly visible on the pistil. All! After a couple of days, you will notice that the fruit has started. I hope it's clear that you need to have several such jars of pollen from different vines? And in order not to be confused, they and the vines should be numbered.

Such a hassle for a marakoka is needed only with the first flowers, then mass flowering begins, bees and other insects enter the pollination process. It is important to know that for the fruit to ripen, 60 days must pass from the moment of pollination. So consider: in my region (south) it is desirable to finish pollination by about the beginning of August.

Fruit ripening

An interesting feature of the marakoka is that its fruits very quickly, in a few days, gain their full size, but they ripen and gain weight for a long time, as I said, 60 days. The size of the fruits I had was about 7 cm in length and 5-6 cm in diameter, weight up to 60 grams. The result is not outstanding, but still.

How to determine if a fruit is ripe or not? A fully ripe fruit falls to the ground on its own and emits an incomparable aroma. So you can't go wrong.

Fortunately for us outside the tropics, marakoka fruit can be ripened quite successfully. If a cold snap is expected (by the way, the ovary can withstand a drop of up to -5 degrees), the fruits from the vines can be removed and folded into a cardboard box, and a few apples or bananas can be put there. After 10–20 days, the smell of tropical fruits will notify you that ripening has occurred. Yes, the taste will be more sour than that of naturally ripened ones, but in the second half of autumn you can rejoice at this too.

Wintering of Passiflora incarnate

Now about wintering. There are several options for different regions. For example, in the south, the vine is cut off, leaving about 1 meter above the ground, folded into a ring and covered with agrofibre and earth. So it hibernates safely and begins its growth in the spring. In more northern regions, the liana is also cut off, but it is completely dug out of the ground, placed in a suitable container (container, 10 l bucket) and brought into the basement.

At a low, but positive temperature (+ 5 … + 8 ° C), incarnate passionflower spends the winter, gains strength, and in the spring (after the ground warms up and the threat of frost has passed) it is planted in open ground. To get a larger and earlier harvest, the container with the plant can be brought into the house in March.

Fruit use

Well, and a little about the fruits themselves. This is such a large green berry, when ripe it is slightly yellowish. Inside, under the thin skin, there are many arylus - seeds surrounded by a jelly-like sweet-sour and very aromatic pulp. In the case of marakoka, it is quite difficult to separate the pulp from the seeds. Therefore, if you do not collect seeds for cultivation, then you can eat with them, or you can beat in a blender, turning everything into a homogeneous mass. It is an excellent filler for yoghurt, ice cream, cottage cheese. You can cook jelly and jam from the pulp.

By the way, it was meat-red pasiflora that was grown and grown as a medicinal plant. All of its parts have sedative properties, and, according to the manufacturer, it is one of the components of the famous Novo-Passit drug.
