Video: 10 Exotic Varieties Of Watermelon That Will Surprise You. Description, Photo
Green striped watermelon fruits with juicy red pulp are familiar to everyone. Many of us love this berry so much that, despite the rather difficult agricultural technology, they grow it in the beds and sometimes even in greenhouses. It would seem, how can a watermelon surprise us, except for its sweetness and size ?! But it turns out that it can !!! There are varieties that are so unusual for us that, considering them, we ask ourselves: is this a watermelon? In this article, I propose to get acquainted with this culture more broadly - to find out what other watermelons are, besides those to which we are accustomed. What makes them unique? And, who knows, maybe some of the exotic plants will appear on your beds!
1. Seed watermelon
Most often, we find information about how wonderful seedless watermelons are - eat the pulp and do not need to be distracted by spitting out the seeds. But this watermelon, with the strange name ' Dagua' ("Dagua"), on the contrary, is grown for the sake of delicious seeds.
Each fruit contains about 300 of them. All of them are large, fleshy, with a peculiar color - they are black themselves, and the sides are fawn. Originally a seed watermelon from the Kalahari Desert. The largest production of its seeds in China.
It is believed that watermelon seeds are very useful for the digestive, cardiovascular and nervous systems, normalize blood sugar, and improve immunity. And very nutritious - 100 g contains 557 kcal.
These seeds, like sunflower seeds, can be fried in a pan or dried in the oven. During heat treatment, they do not lose their properties.
2. White watermelon
Grade ' Navajo Winter' («Winter Navajo") is known for its unusual color of the skin - all white outside. Inside, it's just pink. This "handsome" was bred in America. It differs from ordinary watermelons by a low sucrose content, almost round fruit shape and low weight. It also has a long shelf life, which is why it is sometimes called winter watermelon. To grow up like this - to surprise your friends and neighbors!
Very similar to the 'Navajo Winter' variety of watermelon "Whole-leaved". But it is even lighter, since it does not even have a hint of stripes - just a uniformly white color.
3. Yellow-crested watermelons
Here we are talking about the yellow color of the peel. When you look at a plot with such plants, not knowing about the characteristics of the variety, you are perplexed: melons are watermelon, and the fruits are melons! But these watermelons are yellow only on the outside, inside they, like ordinary ones, have red flesh.
There are still few yellow-baked varieties of watermelons. ' Gold in Gold' ("Gold is gold"), ' Jumanji' ("Jumanji") and "The Gift of the Sun" - characterized by high sweetness. Hybrid "Dabao F1" has excellent keeping quality.
4. Varieties of watermelons with an extraordinary color
The Moon and Stars watermelon variety is so named for a reason. This name was born because of the unusual color of the fruit: bright yellow dots are scattered over a dark green background and one yellow spot is located.
This variety cannot be called a novelty - it is more than 100 years old. But a rarity - yes! At one time, he was practically lost and survived only thanks to a few collectors.
But, besides the intricate coloring, this watermelon carries other excellent features. The shape of its fruit is oblong. The color of the pulp is red or yellow-orange (there are two varieties). The taste is sweet and very sweet. Fruit size up to 40 kg! And what's interesting is that this is not a hybrid, but a variety.
5. Black watermelon
Here many can remember the sensational Japanese variety ' Densuke' ("Densuke"). Who hasn't heard of him? After all, this is the most expensive watermelon in the world. Its price often exceeds $ 200. And the first ripe fruit is sold at auction. And the record holder in this matter was a berry weighing 8 kg, sold for $ 6300!
But in fact it is just a watermelon, and similar black varieties can be found here. For example, the well-known "Ogonyok", "Black Prince", "Suga Baby", "Black Tyrant", "Black Excellent F1", "Sugar Baby", "Red Star F1", etc.
6. Marble watermelons
Their difference is considered to be a dark marble mesh on a light color of the bark. Often these are oblong varieties with rather large (up to 15 kg) fruits and dense red or pink flesh, with a moderate number of seeds.
Examples of marble coloring are "Honey Giant", "Refined", "Charleston Gray", "Snake of Georgia".
7. Watermelons with yellow flesh
"Amazing watermelon" can also be called green outside, yellow inside. There are a lot of them today. And they appeared quite recently. Their parents were the usual red watermelons and wild ones with yellow flesh. In addition to color, they are distinguished from ordinary ones by a somewhat peculiar taste, as well as a smaller amount of seeds. And the record weight of this line usually does not exceed 8 kg.
Yellow-fleshed watermelon varieties:
- Orange Honey and Missouri Yellow are especially sweet;
- "Lunar" - has a pleasant lemon flavor and very small seeds;
- "Golden drink" and "Golden" - are distinguished by the taste of exotic fruits;
- "Imbar", "Prince of Hamlet" and ' Yellow Buttercap F1' ("Elou Buttercup F1 ') - does not contain seeds;
- "Yellow Dragon" - has honey pulp;
- "Vector" - has a nutmeg flavor;
- "Healing nectar" - not particularly sweet, but very mellow;
- 'Orangeglo' ("Orangeglow") - one of the largest watermelons, with a fruit weight of up to 15 kg.
The intensity of the internal color for all these varieties is different and can be either pure yellow or orange, and turning into pinkish.
8. Varieties of watermelons with white flesh
Again, we are talking about the unusual color of the pulp - white or cream. Today, you can find a number of such varieties on sale, but mainly they are exotic and are sold by collectors. The first white-fleshed watermelon was discovered in South Africa. It took its origin from a wild ancestor called Tsamma melon.
The difference between this line is not only in the color of the pulp. In terms of taste, such watermelons are inferior to both red and many yellow, and "take", mainly, exotic. But there are sweetness record holders among them! The sweetest varieties are considered 'White Wonder' («White miracle"), ' Shiro of Kuma' («White Bear"), ' White for Sugar Lump' («A piece of sugar"). The peel of such varieties is thin, the flesh is tender, almost transparent on the cut.
9. Giant watermelons
This sort of ' Carolina You Cross' («Carolina Cross"). Its fruits often take part in the "biggest watermelon" contests. And it is no coincidence, because the potential of the variety is to form watermelons weighing 30-50 kg. And when grown for an exhibition, using special technologies, and over 100 kg! The world record for this variety is 122 kg.
However, among domestic watermelons there is also a "heavyweight" - a hybrid "Russian size F1". The weight of its fruits can also reach 100 kg.
Both varieties are torpedo-shaped and have a slightly light, but pronounced real watermelon color.
Not everyone knows this word. And because this culture was bred quite recently from crossing a watermelon and a pumpkin. Its authors are Ukrainian breeders. Hence the somewhat strange name: "kavun" in translation from Ukrainian "watermelon", "harbuz" - in translation "pumpkin".
So it's not really a watermelon. And it looks more like a pumpkin. However, both parents were mixed in taste. At the same time, the sugar content of the pulp is lower than that of a watermelon, and the density is higher. The skin color is orange or green, with or without stripes. The color of the pulp is white or orange. The seeds are dark, like a watermelon, but large, like a pumpkin. They also taste like the seeds of both parents.
The value of kavbuz is in its medicinal properties, which it does not lose even after heat treatment.
