The products sold have a reasonable price, attractive appearance and, for the most part, are well stored. In addition to the fact that we like the process of growing something, all gardeners are convinced that their vegetables and fruits are healthier than store ones. Is it pleasant to think that the family eats organic vitamin products? But is it really so? Let's figure it out.

What soil do your plants grow in?

The dream of most gardeners and gardeners is fatty black soil. So, don't dream about them! It is on high-humus soils that vegetable plants tend to accumulate large amounts of nitrates. For plants, this is a reserve source of nitrogen, because they also make stashes for a rainy day.

And we also feed them with fresh manure and urea. After that, they grow, of course, by leaps and bounds, simultaneously storing more and more nitrates. The best "nitrate-forming" option is high-humus soil, 95% humidity and high temperature. That is, a greenhouse.

The minimum amount of nitrates is accumulated by vegetable plants without top dressing on sandy loam soil, the average amount - on loam.

But you can plant a garden on chernozems, because few nitrates reach the fruits - they are all in the roots (as well as radionuclides, by the way).

However, besides nitrogen, the soil has a lot of interesting things, and the greatest wealth is soil microorganisms. It is their activity that makes nutrients available to plants. That is, it would be good to plant everything on virgin soil, where there are many microorganisms. It is not for nothing that at all times virgin lands were so valued.

And you also need sufficient lighting. Therefore, only southerners, where the sun is abundant, can afford somewhat thickened plantings.

Thus, virgin medium loamy structural soils with sufficient illumination are optimal for growing vegetables. And on the "oily", moist, heated soil in a greenhouse or greenhouse, tomatoes and, especially, cucumbers, will accumulate 2-3 times more nitrates and 3-5 times less vitamins than simple soil. So why are your greenhouse vegetables healthier than store vegetables?

How do you feed your plants?

Well, it's clear what! Manure, compost, ash and mineral fertilizers. Many have come across a situation when the plant "fattens", drives the tops to the detriment of fruiting. This is the clearest example of overfeeding, in this case, with nitrogen. Nitrates are mentioned above.

Overfeeding with other elements, both macro and micro, is often not so obvious, but does not benefit either the plants or us who consume these plants. Plants have everything, like people - for free and sweet vinegar. Therefore, with readily available abundant feeding, they become large, loose, with weakened protective reactions, and stuffed with unhealthy elements. Everything is like people.

And if the plant still needs to work with manure, compost, ash for assimilation, then mineral fertilizers are pure fast food.

Large agricultural enterprises have specialists and laboratory facilities for the rational feeding of crops, and summer residents? Can you boast that you know your soil, the lack and excess of elements in them? Most often, "by eye". And from a wide soul. And the plants will accumulate all this excess in tissues and fruits - well, a freebie! In this case, vegetables are also not healthier than store-bought vegetables.

How do you protect your plants from diseases and pests?

In industrial cultivation, experiments are not welcome, therefore, regular treatments against pests (preventive and in case of infection) with drugs that are guaranteed to destroy everyone without exception. After all, no one will take wormy apples or those with scab spots for implementation.

Therefore, pesticides in all shop vegetables and fruits are necessarily, varied and quite a lot. For example, in the south of the Russian Federation, industrial orchards are cultivated up to 18 times per season, vegetable plantations - up to 12. There are no severe frosts, and most pests overwinter safely.

And in our stores we have products, mainly from the southern regions, or from abroad, where it is even warmer, and, accordingly, there are even more treatments. Of course, there are checks, norms, but somehow I don't want to use pesticides even in accordance with the norms. And there is also protection against damage during storage, processing to ensure the presentation …

In private backyards, everything is much more interesting: someone pours pesticides, fungicides and insecticides with might and main, if only not a single living creature touches the cherished tomato. In addition, herbicides, so that the grass does not grow. Here, vegetables and fruits from the store are definitely better.

Others fundamentally do not use "any chemistry" so that vegetables and fruits are environmentally friendly. They are clean, of course. Environmentally friendly. But with a touch of fungus, stains from damage by insects, in places gnawed by slugs, bear and wireworm. Unpresentable. It is good and useful to eat by yourself, but the guests are already turning up their nose. Sometimes loved ones too.

Although, of course, there is a wonderful category of advanced gardeners, gardeners who manage to grow products that are not only harmless, but also useful.

What are the healthiest plants?

I think no one is deluded about the fact that plants store vitamins and all kinds of useful elements in fruits so that a person can eat them and be healthy and contented. They do not feel any reverence for us, everything is much more prosaic.

For example, flavonoids - the very ones that lower cholesterol levels, exhibit antioxidant, antiviral activity, are regulators of biochemical processes in cells, in general, terribly useful. In some small volume, they are always present in plants, but their number and variety increases significantly when the plant is under stress: a sharp but not critical cold snap, for example, or the onset of fungal diseases.

Or here are vitamins A and E - the plant accumulates them to fight many diseases, for example, cabbage against mucous bacteriosis.

Vitamin C, which you cannot pass by, since it is not synthesized by our body, accumulates in large quantities in plants also when exposed to stress factors.

That is, useful substances are kind of like plant immunity, which is activated in case of any misfortune.

The content of vitamin C in greenhouse vegetables is 2-6 times less than in ground vegetables, beta-carotene in greenhouse vegetables is 4-7 times less.

That is, our efforts to provide cultivated plants with affordable nutrition, protection from diseases and pests lead to a decrease in their biological activity, a decrease in the content of vitamins and other useful compounds.

Who is to blame and what to do?

Well, apparently, we ourselves are to blame. Excessive care and feeding is not good for anyone. This in no way means that the plants need to be planted, and then let them unscrew themselves. Cultural plants, for the most part, will not survive without our participation, they have already forgotten how to do it.

As always, there are many options for overcoming this situation. You can eat store vegetables and fruits, supplemented with vitamins and dietary supplements. You can add wild plants in large quantities to your menu. You can scientifically approach the cultivation of plants on your site - do a soil analysis, calculate fertilizing, apply environmentally friendly treatments.

Or you can switch to organic farming, or as close as possible to it. For millions of years of existence, nature has already adjusted all processes:

  • The fertility of the soil is created by a large amount of organic residues and the work of microorganisms, all of which are converted into elements that are assimilated by plants.
  • Protection against many pests - in the variety of crops grown.
  • Moderate "intimidation" of plants with fungal diseases or temperature changes does not allow them to relax and forces them to accumulate vitamins and biologically active substances.
  • Not overfed plants accumulate less heavy metals and get sick less.

The choice of seeds is now huge, planting material, in general, is also a good assortment, so you can choose the varieties suitable for the conditions of a particular site without any problems. Only the selection should be thoughtful: it is advisable to take zoned varieties, they will have to be protected less, and the benefits from them will be noticeably greater.

That is, if there is a desire to grow really useful products, you need to moderate your gardening fervor, learn not to nurse the plants, but help them when it is difficult for them:

  • Not to feed them with mineral fast food, but to provide them with the opportunity to get their own food.
  • Do not water them every day (washing out useful elements from the soil), but retain moisture.
  • Do not exterminate all insects at the root, but fight only with those causing noticeable harm.

All this, of course, requires a lot of theoretical training. Winter is ahead, it's time to do some theory.
