Years of experience observing cats helped me to conclude that every cat or cat has its own individual language to communicate with its owner. We always and almost without mistakes understand when our kitty wants to eat or sleep, and when she just needs attention. For all the uniqueness of this language, there are some common features. For example, all cats ask for food in the same way or show us that they are in pain. In this article, I have described the main behavioral features of cats that will help an untrained person better understand their needs.

What does the cat want to tell us?
What does the cat want to tell us?

1. The cat wants to eat

You definitely won't miss it! The cat won't let you. He will walk in circles around you, blocking the passage. Raising its muzzle and raising its tail high, it will rub against your legs, from time to time making a sound similar to a satisfied "me!" This is the surest sign that it is time for him to dine.

There are a number of additional signs. For example, you sat down with something delicious in front of the TV, and although the food on our table is not suitable for cats, they do not know about it. Cats, like dogs, sometimes beg. And then the whole evening you will not have peace!

Your pet will rest its forehead against you, butting at the same time like a calf. He will purr to you, sing songs, look into your eyes, psychologically blackmailing you. With all his appearance, as if saying: "I love you so much, let me eat!" Well, if you are some kind of very slow-witted, then he without hesitation can try and take his paw …

Cats are nocturnal animals. They, of course, will get some sleep in the evening, but, as a rule, at four in the morning they announce "waking up". At the same time, they wake up very hungry. And you have a dream at this time. Therefore, they will try to correct this misunderstanding: for the rest of the night they sing songs for you under the bedroom door, and if they get into your bed, then they will not hesitate to "dig" you out from under the blanket with a paw.

There are several options here. The easiest way is to leave some dry food and water in the evening. Then the cat will get up, eat, and most likely go back to sleep. Or - get up with her and run to feed. It's complicated. Either listen to her / his serenades until the morning.

2. Something hurts the cat

Your cat suddenly didn't ask for food in the morning and didn't even come out to you. And when you yourself offered her food, she did not pay attention to the food. Instead, it sits tightly on its stomach, the coat is tousled, the pupils can be dilated. This is a sure sign that something is hurting her.

And it doesn't have to be the belly. It could be anything. Once my cat fell from the second floor and broke its paw, sitting in the same way. At the same time, if they feel really bad, when trying to pick them up, they can be aggressive and even try to bite you. But after all, you and I sometimes break down on our home, when we feel bad. Everything is like people.

So don't waste your time, go to the vet. He will do tests, X-rays, ultrasounds and understand what happened to your kitty.

Other signs that your cat is sick

Here are some more signs when something is wrong with your kitty:

The tongue is very strongly and constantly sticking out of the mouth. The cat does not remove it at all. This is a very bad sign. As a rule, it speaks of some serious illness. I had this once with a cat. As it turned out, urolithiasis. I didn't understand right away, and he fell into a coma. Thank God, now everything is all right with him, he was cured. But when you see this, don't hesitate.

Also cats can start to cough, as it were. This can be a sign of either worms, or, if the cat is old, of a heart attack, or she could choke on a thread, rain (from a Christmas tree) or something else.

If the cat vomited, as a veterinarian friend explained to me, up to two times, this is normal. Cats can swallow their own hair, and then they vomit. They can deliberately provoke vomiting in themselves, for example, by eating grass in the country. Sometimes on an empty stomach, there may also be vomiting in the form of white foam. But when she vomits endlessly or vomits once, but there you see blood, or vomit is unnaturally bright, yellow, like a marker, for example, it may be a sign of infection or some other disease. You should immediately contact your veterinarian.

If the cat is shaking something. For example, with her head, her ears may hurt. If with a paw, then examine it carefully, she could get hurt somewhere, and it hurts her to walk.

If the cat has stopped grooming, and before she was always clean, this is also a sign of ill health.

3. The cat is bored

Is the cat in a playful mood, does not give you a pass, while bringing you toys, trying to make a toy out of yourself or out of your slippers? Throwing balls under your feet, climbing into your arms and not allowing you to stare at your phone? She is bored. Play with her!

Cats play their whole lives. This is the most important component of their health, along with proper nutrition. Cats play even at a very respectable age. True, of course, less. And for kittens it is simply vital for their good growth. For the proper development of muscles, bones and joints.

Cats are social animals, and if you only have one, she might get bored. Then it is simply necessary for her normal mental health to sometimes play with her. Plus it will bring you closer. And you, too, will receive a huge positive boost of vivacity.

To play together, you do not have to buy some expensive toy. If you have nothing at all at hand, then take a piece of paper and a string. And you will see how much pleasure you and your kitty will get.

4. The cat requires cleanliness

Cats are very clean animals. They do not like a dirty litter box and will not go into it. If their pot is a mess, then without the slightest remorse they can sit down and make a puddle right on the floor. But, as a rule, they will warn you in advance that you need to get out.

My cats, for example, begin in this case deliberately loudly to bury something in the pot. At the same time, they will not even touch the filler. They simply knock on the edge of the tray with their paws and shout at the same time. And this is not the same kind "me" when they ask for food. No! This is clearly a curse! You will understand that they will scream differently. For some reason, at such moments it seems to me that they say to me: "Man, come on quickly to the tray!"

5. The cat is about to attack

The cat turned its ears back and folded them into an envelope, carefully looking at you, while making eerie, chilling sounds. Her pupils are dilated. She is about to attack you now.

What did you expect? They are predators. They don't like familiarity. And you yourself decide what you did to bring this gentle fluffy creature to such a state. I can only say that cats don't just attack. So there was a reason. And the cat is just defending.

Most often, of course, cats are aggressive. Especially not castrated. And in relation to each other. They will fight endlessly on the same square. They are very extraterritorial, so they will not tolerate anyone else. Although, now my cats get along calmly on a common territory. But it wasn't easy.

Cats can also become aggressive if they protect their kittens. There was a case with me as a child. I had a cat, she probably considered me her kitten and very much protected me from everything. And as soon as someone from my household raised their voice at me, even for the sake of a joke, this kitty showed very aggressive behavior.

In any case, remember that what you sow is what you reap. The way you treat your cat is how she will treat you.

6. The cat confesses his love

Most often, our cats love us. And do not hesitate to tell us about it. If your pet butts you with her head, hums you - she says: "I love you." Just like that, no way. Only cats can love this way.

She may start licking you. Run up to you with gentle purrs, such as mother cats call their kittens - now you are her kitten too, and you need to be washed.

Or, alternately fingering her paws, she will press on your stomach or somewhere else, this is the so-called "milk walk" - now you are her mother. Adult animals do this too, sometimes all their lives. And it does not depend on whether the kitten had a mother or he lost her early for some reason.

I have a cat that was born in front of my eyes, now she is already an adult and continues to live with her mother. I can say with confidence that she was not deprived of maternal care. This is just a manifestation of love.

The cat bites you lightly, not hard, just bites slightly with its fangs. At the same time hums. She doesn't bite. She kisses you! How else can she do it?

And if a cat lets you scratch his belly, he trusts you with his life.

7. This is mine

As soon as a cat enters your home, it immediately starts marking its territory. Even if you have not a cat, but a neutered cat. Does not matter. They will rub against all objects with their muzzles. They have special glands behind their ears that secrete only theirs, an individual smell. This is part of their physiology.

They also mark the territory with their paws. There are glands there too. But after the cat says to the whole world "this is mine", there will be only one unmarked object - you.

Therefore, she will start rubbing her muzzle about you and try to "claw" a little. So she says that you are her property.

And there are extreme cases of love. Usually not neutered cats, everyone knows about it, leave their marks everywhere. With urine. And they can tag your personal belongings and even you. They don't want to offend you in any way. The cats just say: "I love you and you are only mine / mine, I am not ready to share you with another cat."

Dear Readers! These are the basic "phrases" from a cat's phrasebook. But, of course, anyone who has cats at home will tell a lot of new ones. Everything is individual. And each cat composes this phrasebook especially for herself and her loved one.

Here are some more interesting "phrases", maybe you have the same:

  • The cat sits motionless in front of the door and looks attentively at it - someone came, but I did not hear.
  • The cat growls at the door - it's someone unknown who has come.
  • The cat defiantly sat with its back to me - offended.
  • The cat sits in front of me, meows demandingly and pokes his hand with his muzzle - "I came, but you don't stroke me."
  • The cat is very pleased with something, hums, fiddles with its paws, as in "milk walking" and, slightly sticking out its tongue, from time to time gives out "me" - she wants emotional support. She as if asks: "I'm a fine fellow, aren't I?"
  • The kitten stands on its hind legs, and puts the front legs on me - it wants to on the handles.
  • The cat sits on the windowsill and, looking out the window, makes such sounds "and-and-and" - swears at the nasty bird.
  • The cat digs out of bed with its paw, can still gently, without claws, stroke the cheek with its paw - it's time to get up.
  • In the evening, the cat looks closely into the eyes, demonstratively digs out the made bed - it's time to go to bed.
