My passion for poultry began as a child. Somehow my mother and I could not pass by the man selling chickens, we bought two fluffs. Over time, 2 chickens grew out of them … When I myself started a family, I decided to breed broiler chickens. And since my children and I lived in the village in the summer, it was interesting for me to have time to raise the bird before the fall - before returning to the city. It turned out that broiler breeding is a very profitable activity. Yes, and there are chores, especially in the first weeks of chickens' life. But the speed at which little chicks turn into large chickens and cockerels ready to eat is well worth it. I will share my experience in breeding broilers in this article.

Which broiler breed to choose?

We used to go for chickens to VDNKh (I live in Moscow), where you could buy excellent broilers. Now everything is easier - you can buy chickens of the desired breed by advertising on the Internet, by specifying your area in the search. Yes, and in the markets of small villages, I think you can buy broiler chickens in the spring, because today this is a very popular area of home poultry farming.

Broilers are also called crosses. These are hybrids of chickens that intensively gain weight. Therefore, it is not surprising that an adult bird weighing 3-4 kg grows from a chicken in 2-3 months, no.

Here are some modern broiler chicken hybrids I would advise you to pay attention to:

  • Cobb-500;
  • "Change";
  • Broiler-M;
  • Ross-308;
  • Broiler-61;
  • "Gibro-6".

Broiler "Cobb-500"

Broilers "Cobb-500" are legendary. Keeping such chickens is very profitable - in a month and a half you can get a bird weighing about 3 kg!

In addition, this breed of poultry has the following advantages:

  • has a calm character;
  • under good conditions of detention, almost does not get sick;
  • does not require walking;
  • gaining weight together;
  • the carcass has attractive yellow skin, and the white feather does not leave dark spots on it when plucked;
  • has well-developed legs and chest;
  • adapts well to conditions of detention.

Broiler "Smena"

Broilers of this breed:

  • with proper nutrition and good care, they quickly gain weight, they can gain up to 50 g of mass per day;
  • quickly adapt to new conditions;
  • have a well-developed breast, voluminous body;
  • chicken of excellent taste;
  • very viable - on average 97% of young animals survive.

Cross "Broiler-M"

Crosses of this breed are notable for their small physique, therefore they do not require much space during maintenance. By purchasing representatives of this breed, you can get the final product of two types - as these are meat and egg broilers.

If you wish to raise them for slaughter, then poultry at the age of two months will weigh up to 1.8 kg. If you want to get eggs, then winged pets will not disappoint here either. Chickens begin to lay early - at 5 months of age.

Broiler "Ross-308"

These chickens are weight gainers. They add up to 60 g per day, so in a month and a half such a bird will pull 2.5 kg! The meat of the Ross-308 broilers is lighter than that of ordinary hens and roosters, but no less tasty.

Also, these meat and egg crosses rush perfectly, are unpretentious to living conditions, are picky about food.

Cross "Broiler-61"

A modern breed of cross that has also proven itself very well. Chicks have excellent immunity - young animals boast 98% survival rate. These broilers have a strong body, yellow skin and white feathers. For a rooster or chicken to gain 1 kg, only 2 kg of feed is required. By the age of two months, these crosses weigh about 2 kg.

Broiler "Gibro-6"

The strongest chickens of this breed are capable of gaining up to 80 g per day. By two months, such chickens already weigh 2 kg! These broilers have excellent plumage and can be kept in cooler coops.

Conditions for keeping chickens in the first weeks

Usually broiler chickens are bought at day old. Naturally, at this time they are still completely dependent on the brood hen. When we bought the first sneakers, we figured out how to make an artificial "mother" for them.

I took a three-liter jar and sewed her "clothes" from an old woolen blanket. Along the height and diameter of the can, I cut a rectangle out of warm fabric, but with reserves. So that the chickens do not accidentally glue the threads, I tucked the top and bottom of this model, hemmed. The result is a cover.

Then I cut out another piece of the same size, cut it from the bottom with a fringe, not reaching 5 cm to the top.The width of each strip turned out to be 2-3 cm.I scorched the edges of this blank over the flame so that the little pranksters could not pull out the threads from here. Then I created two more such details, sewed them to the top of the can. In this case, the resulting fringe was at a distance from the shoulders of the can to the bottom.

I pour water into the jar about +45 ° C. Naturally, the water in the jar constantly has to be changed to warm, because it will be cooled. Chickens climb here, as if under the feathers of a laying mother, touching strips of fabric with their noses in order to penetrate deeper under the wings of their improvised parent. They are warm and comfortable. Near such a jar, about 10 zheltootiks fit freely.

This is the number of chickens it is advisable to buy for broiler breeding if you keep them in your house or apartment for the first weeks. And if you have the opportunity to keep them right away in the barn, then you can purchase 20 pieces. But keep in mind that you need a dry and very warm barn. Most likely, it will need to be heated for the first 3 days. A bed of hay and straw is laid on the floor, and over time, perches are made. But that's all later.

The first three days of life are the most important for broiler chicks. These days the temperature of the space surrounding them should be + 32 … + 35 ° С (this is what a hen bank is for). Then the temperature is gradually lowered to the usual room temperature (I replenish warm water in the jar less and less, and then completely remove the "brood hen"). And when the chickens are fledged, you can keep them on a glazed balcony during the day, if the air temperature there does not drop below +20 ° C.

In the first days of life, broiler chickens are constantly in the box. On the third day, newcomers can fence off a part of the kitchen or shed so that small crosses can stretch during the day. At night, the chickens are again collected in a box, where there is bedding, food, water.

It is important to follow the hygiene measures in the box. The feeders are suspended so that they are at the level of the chicks' heads. Then little pranksters will not be able to shit here and trample food with their feet.

Newspapers can be used for the bottom layer of the bedding, for the top layer, ordinary gray wrapping paper, A4 sheets or ordinary diapers are suitable. As soon as the litter becomes unusable, all this must be rolled up, thrown away, replaced with a new one.

As for the light, our chickens have enough daylight, which falls from the nearby window. But we buy them in mid-April, when the daylight hours are already long enough.

If you keep chicks in a plywood box, you can attach an incandescent lamp to it, which will give the chicks both warmth and light. But you need to take care of safety precautions so that curious sneaks do not accidentally burn themselves. Therefore, the lamp is suspended at a sufficient height. It is better to place it on one side of the plywood box so that the inhabitants of the "house" can move to the other if they get hot.

Broilers do not need night lighting - 17 hours of daylight is enough for them.

At the age from birth to a month, broilers are given compound feed under the marking PK-5, and when the chicks are 30 days old, they introduce compound feed PK-6 into their diet

The subtleties of feeding broiler chickens

In the first week of life, chicks need to be fed every 3 hours, including at night. To teach kids to eat, I boil an egg, chop it very finely with a knife and pour it on a flat saucer. I have to be a brood hen for a while. I tap the edge of the saucer with my index finger. Chickens mistake this for biting. Soon they themselves begin to peck at food (hard-boiled egg and boiled millet) in this way.

Now on sale there are balanced compound feeds, using which you can achieve intensive growth of crosses. Such food should contain at least 20% protein. It is on special feed that broilers will grow at an accelerated pace.

At the age from birth to a month, they are given compound feed under the label PK-5, and when the chicks are 30 days old, they are introduced into their diet with compound feed PK-6. This food is not soaked, but dry.

Chicks should always have fresh water available. Of course, little weasels will wet their paws there, try to shit. Therefore, you can purchase special drinkers or change the water to clean water in time. It is vital for them. After all, chickens not only drink, but also wash clogged nostrils here.

For the first three days, each chick should be periodically checked for crop. To do this, take the bird in one hand, with the other hand gently feel the goiter. If it is not filled, the chicken looks weak, it is put in a separate box and fed in it. Still, such a measure will save a weakened baby from being trampled by brothers. If he cannot eat on his own, then he is given moistened food through a pipette, mixing low-fat kefir with chopped yolk, and drinking from a pipette.

Healthy babies should not be given antibiotics "just in case." After all, we want to get healthy meat, without such additives? If broilers do get sick, it is usually a non-communicable ailment. But to prevent this from happening, in addition to a warm "home", chickens should have a balanced diet, including:

  • corn;
  • other herbal products;
  • animal supplements;
  • vitamins and minerals.

In order not to prepare such a mixture ourselves, it is more advisable to buy ready-made compound feed. But, if this is not possible, chopped onions are introduced into the diet of chickens from the third day. You can use chopped wood lice, dandelion. When the chickens are one week old, they simply hang them in bunches so that they can peck at them.

Here is a recipe for homemade compound feed:

  • wheat - 26 g;
  • barley - 16 g;
  • feed fat - 6 g;
  • meat and bone meal, fish meal, cake, latitude - 34 g;
  • feed yeast - 10 g;
  • corn - 90 g;
  • grass - 2 g;
  • chalk - 2 g.

All these components are crushed, dry mixed and placed in feeders. When the chickens are 3 days old, bowls with sand are placed in a box, to which wood ash, chalk, and crushed shells are added. From here, little ones will be able to select those ingredients that will aid their digestion.

To prevent disease and strengthen immunity, on the eighth day, each chicken should be given a drop of trivitamin.

We already feed weekly chicks 7 times a day, and two-week old - 6 times.

Moving chickens to the country

When our chickens are 3 weeks old, they are already well fledged and ready to move to nature. We load them into cardboard boxes and go all together to the village - to the dacha.

Here my husband and I built a walk for the pets. The husband sharpened three wooden pegs 170 cm high and drove them into the ground 30 cm so that a triangle formed. Outside there is a netting. Its edges are overlapped and fastened with a piece of wire. This is necessary so that you can open the structure from this side and take our pussies to a warm chicken coop for the night before the evening dew.

When in the morning I drive the chickens out of the chain-link netting, I cover it with gauze on top. This is to prevent the birds of prey from harming the chickens. After all, it is impossible to be near the chicks all day, and crows, kites sometimes fly over the village.

This design is good in that you can pull the slabs out of the ground and move it to a place where the grass has not yet been pecked, there is no droppings. By the way, it is an excellent concentrated fertilizer. You can dry manure, harvest it for future use, then dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:20 and fertilize garden crops, fruit bushes and trees.

In the additional diet of crosses of this age (except for specialized feed), we include:

  • various cereals - boiled and dry;
  • pounded boiled potatoes, carrots, chopped nettles, wood lice, chopped shells;
  • waste from our table.

But broilers definitely need a balanced feed with sufficient protein. Therefore, compound feed for crosses should become the main one in their diet. After moving to the dacha (from the fourth week of life), we feed them 4-5 times a day.

When to cut broilers?

When broilers grow up, gain the required weight, it is impractical to keep them further, since after two months of age the weight of broilers is gaining more slowly. In our first experience of breeding broilers, we parted with only males. Chickens at the age of 5 months began to lay eggs (the breed was meat and egg). This lasted until mid-November. We gave the hens to a good friend for the winter, and took them back the next spring. These birds supplied our family with egg products for the next summer. But that's a completely different story.

And after slaughter, meat broilers need to be plucked. To do this, the carcasses are placed in hot water with a temperature of + 50 ° C. Then the nib is easier to separate. But you should not cook such a bird right away, as it will be tough. We need to freeze it. It will be possible to feast on healthy meat no earlier than in a day.

Dear Readers! There are many advantages to breeding crosses. In two summer months you can grow a bird that will provide your family with meat, the quality of which you will not doubt. Broilers can also be bred for sale, as it is profitable. After all, 1 kg of such homemade meat today costs 250 rubles.
