Rhododendrons fully justify their status as an elite shrub. Even the difficulties in growing these plants and strict soil requirements do not prevent them from remaining one of the most beloved flowering stars. Rhododendrons are good in coniferous corners and in hedges, in front gardens and flower beds, as well as soloists and in groups. But the title of the most colorful way of using this oriental shrub in gardens is rightfully claimed by mono flowers from rhododendrons - a bright and easy-to-care option for growing a whole collection of varieties.

Benefits of a rhododendron mono flower

In recent years, mono flower beds - flower beds in which a single plant species is the focus - have become increasingly popular. A ceremonial composition, revealing all the advantages of a favorite garden plant, allows you to admire the unique flowering and fully appreciate all the advantages of a favorite. The new interpretation of the sirengarium, iridarium, rose garden, host flower garden allows you to set up a desired corner in any garden - large, medium and small.

Flower beds from one plant are equipped by choosing different varieties and types of inimitable, fashionable and favorite garden plants. No exception - and one of the most beloved shrubs - rhododendron, the lush flowering of which is difficult to overshadow with anything else.

Rhododendrons are deciduous and evergreens, strikingly diverse in their hardiness, winter hardiness, and size. All rhododendrons are different, but at the same time they are strikingly similar. From miniature border rhododendrons, which they love to call azaleas, to gigantic species of plants, there is plenty to choose from.

Even the most modest bush is always distinguished by its special flowering: the shields of the rhododendron inflorescences literally hide the bush under them, turning the plant into a bright lace miracle. Each individual rhododendron flower can be viewed endlessly, but the abundance and overall effect are the main trump cards of this shrub.

There are many options for using rhododendrons in garden design. In most cases, significant restrictions are imposed by the characteristics of the soil and the structure of the site, because it is not possible to find a secluded corner with acidic soil for rhododendron everywhere. Of course, preliminary soil preparation partially solves any problem, and the correction of fertilizing allows you to compensate for the original soil parameters, but it is much easier to grow rhododendrons in a separate corner with ideal conditions, without scattering your efforts over dozens of places in the garden.

Rhododendrons on a flower garden from a single plant feel more comfortable than in complex decorative ensembles. The thing is that such a flower bed is created specifically for the plant and provides for conditions that fully meet its requirements. On a flower garden of rhododendrons, there will be no difficulties with the selection of neighbors that can grow in the same soil and the same lighting as the main shrub. Structure, composition, soil reaction, drainage, mulching - all this can be thought of when laying out a separate flower garden.

A flower garden made of rhododendrons is a chance to realize the dream of a collection of these plants. Even a small collection of species and varieties on one site will allow each plant to shine and enhance the attractiveness of its neighbor. The impression of the beauty of rhododendrons in the ensemble is amplified tenfold, on the monoclumba the very unique charm of rhododendrons is fully revealed.

The rhododendron flower garden can be constantly expanded and supplemented. For those gardeners who truly love this plant, growing a rhododendron on a flower garden allows you not to give up the temptation to replenish the collection every year. New varieties of your favorite rhododendrons can be planted to the already finished flower bed base or periodically expand the flower garden at the expense of the adjacent territory, planting new plants on it.

Selection of rhododendrons for a flower garden

For flower beds, the choice can be made according to two criteria. Usually the main landmark is an attempt to stretch the flowering of rhododendrons up to four months. From the rhododendron pointed first to the Schlippenbach rhododendron. From slow- growing hybrids and varieties of multicolored rhododendron to early varieties of Katevba rhododendron and Yakushima and blunt rhododendrons, with the passing of the baton to Japanese, Pukhan and late large-leaved rhododendrons. There is something to "play" with during flowering.

The second criterion - height and color palette - allows you to combine compositions of rhododendrons of various sizes - from wild giants to dwarf varieties in the foreground. When drawing up a flower garden with rhododendrons, it is imperative to observe a direct ranking of height from high varieties in the background to low ones in the front (or from high in the center to low at the edges, if the beds are with a multi-sided view).

When choosing a color palette, you should avoid contrasts and prefer mutually reinforcing harmonious color combinations. Rhododendrons are watercolor plants, picturesque and vibrant. The selection of tones, combined with each other, perfectly complementing each other, will reveal their character much better than dazzling contrasts. There is one more reason to rely on harmonious color combinations in a flower garden with rhododendrons: the plants turn into a solid color spot, and excessive variegation will introduce dissonance and luridness.

For a small garden, provided that compact varieties of rhododendrons are selected, a composition of 5-7 plants can be used.

For a flower garden from rhododendrons, it is advisable to use either seedlings in containers, or plants dug up and transplanted from their own garden. To admire such a flower garden next year, you need to choose adult plants, at least five years old, and old bushes. To achieve high decorativeness of a flower garden of young rhododendrons, you will have to wait about 5 years.

Simple rules for arranging a flower bed of rhododendrons

Rhododendrons do well in partial shade, in secluded, diffused lighting, in places where coolness, calmness and high humidity prevail. A flower garden with rhododendrons can be placed in the shade of garden giants - tall trees that will simulate a forest environment.

A flower garden with rhododendrons that create solid plantings can be placed where conditions are right. Usually it is tied to large trees - they are placed either between two trees, creating an island flower garden, or they create a flowerbed with a one-way view, stretching from the border of the site to the tree. So that such a flower garden does not hide the space, but visually expands it, it is always better to start the border of the flower bed behind the tree, as if continuing the flower garden by the trunk.

Preparing the future flower bed actually comes down to preparing the soil. First of all, you need to remove all the weeds and carry out a deep digging, working through the soil with one and a half or two bayonets of a shovel. Assessing the characteristics of the soil is an important step in helping to properly adjust the conditions for this shrub. When it comes to “medium”, high quality garden soil, it is enough to add compost and peat to create a nutrient and acidic environment and a coarse texture. On depleted soil, complete mineral fertilizers are additionally applied, and on heavy soil, loosening additives and sand are added. A large amount of plant organic matter and a rather coarse structure are optimal for rhododendron.

Arrangement of a flower garden does not require any special tricks:

  1. Plants are laid out on the territory of the flower garden, observing the distances recommended for planting certain species and varieties.
  2. They outline the future arrangement of the bushes, draw sketches to determine the color scheme and adjust the planting, examining them at a distance from different sides.
  3. For each bush, a personal planting hole is dug, taking into account that the root system grows in breadth and for this shrub, the planting holes should be spacious - from 60 cm in diameter.
  4. Seedlings are installed in the planting holes, adjusting the depth of the root collar. If the seedlings are dry, without leaves, old bushes are replanted, which show signs of stunted growth, they can be pruned. For large plants, pruning after planting is also carried out to limit size. Pruning on rhododendrons is carried out just above the dormant buds located in the leaf axils.
  5. The planting holes are filled with substrate and gently compact the soil.
  6. Watering recesses are created around the bushes.
  7. Extensive watering of plants is carried out.
  8. After drying, the soil is mulched. For rhododendrons, crushed coniferous bark is considered the ideal mulch. But you can "close" the soil with ground cover, shade lawn or other materials that do not change the characteristics of the soil. Mulching should protect rhododendrons not only from drying out and loss of looseness by the soil, but also from overheating.

Other plants in the flowerbed of rhododendrons

A flower garden of rhododendrons is created exclusively from them. Other plants are brought there only at the forefront or as padding to create the effect of ceremonial fullness and impeccable beauty. Rhododendrons over time, even with proper pruning, grow and close with their crowns, so continuous compositions with a bare front edge, even when mulched, do not look too neat.

It is better to plant perennials in a flowerbed with rhododendrons when the plants reach their optimal sizes, and not in the early years. First, it makes it easier to avoid mistakes when choosing a distance and calculating the number of plants that can be added to a flower bed. And, secondly, it’s easier to assess whether certain plants are needed and which species will help bring the image of a flower garden to perfection.

Among the crops that can be used to decorate the front edge of a rhododendron flower garden, ferns are the undisputed leaders. Carved foliage in neat rosettes adds a special flavor and, as it were, tampers the plantings of rhododendrons with lace edging. But the host's shadow queen looks no worse as a partner, the selection of varieties of which allows you to play with optical effects and highlighting.

Other perennials also look great at the edge of the rhododendron flower garden:

  • fragrant bedstraw;
  • thiarella;
  • Rogersia podophyllum;
  • Japanese primrose;
  • large-flowered trillium;
  • badan;
  • hellebores black and oriental;
  • Siberian iris;
  • mullein;
  • toothed buzulnik
  • geranium red-brown;
  • serpentine mountaineer;
  • hyacintoides Spanish.

You can supplement compositions with rhododendrons with astilba, and Japanese anemones, and aquilegia - any plants that like acidic soil and partial shade will do. It is best to focus on the assortment of plants typical of other shaded compositions, creating a kind of transition from the rhododendron flower garden to the rest of the garden.

If the rhododendron flower garden is set against a dull background, you can add background plants to it. Spectacular maples or deer trees, hazel, honeysuckle, lilac, willow, cypress, red oak, junipers or pines will help create a spectacular backdrop for a colorful flower garden.
