In any garden there is a place where in summer all plants “burn” from the heat. Hot, dry, sandy, southern corners are a challenge for landscaping. In the spring, the first flowers flaunt here and all perennials are not inferior in growth rates to neighboring flower beds, but as soon as the heat and drought begin, the plants literally wither. And if drought can be compensated for by leaving, then high temperatures and the scorching sun cannot be easily eliminated. But even for such places in the sun there are stars. Indeed, in nature, we often meet plants that are able to put up with extreme heat without losing their beauty.

Where should you set up a heat-resistant flower garden?

It is easy to determine the hottest and driest places in the sun - these are any sites on which they burn out in summer, are in a depressed state, or even unpretentious garden plants die.

Hot spots in the garden are usually associated with south-facing slopes or sides of buildings - places where, on summer days, already difficult weather becomes almost extreme. But a similar problem of landscaping is associated with other situations - large asphalt or concrete areas with open relief, areas between the garden and the street, near the driveway, near the pool or completely paved patio, bed or flower garden along the path in the open space, as well as those areas where it's too hot even for a hardy lawn. All those places where extreme heat resistance of plants is needed.

A separate challenge for planning a bed or a flower garden is projects involving the use of decorative stone mulch, especially light gravel. Long-lasting and luxurious light-colored stone in sunny areas leads to an increased temperature impact on plants. It reflects the sun's rays and burns perennials. And in those cases when they plan to use stone mulch, it is better to think about choosing drought and heat-resistant plants.

The soil characteristics of such sites can be either extremely dry - sandy, stony, or quite average in terms of garden standards. Constant heat, even initially normal soil, dries up so that the root system of plants suffers.

A flower garden made of heat-resistant and drought-resistant crops can also be used as one of the options for a garden, the care of which they want to minimize, replacing part of the lawns with compositions or breaking them up with small beds. Giving up on classic flower beds in favor of hardy crops can create variety and showiness without overloading your gardening schedule.

In areas that are considered too hot, it is worth breaking up simple compositions - beds or flower beds with a repeating rapport of planting plants. 4-6 species, selected, first of all, according to the principle of endurance and contrast among themselves, and a simple planting scheme, which can be repeated until they fill the entire territory - this is a great solution. Simple patterns can be repeated for a narrow mixed border, for a classic mixborder, and for a flower bed, which dilutes a boring picture.

Features of planting and caring for plants in "hot" flower beds

When choosing the conditions for the bed and improving the soil, there are several important things to take care of. The soil should contain high-quality organic matter, preferably in the form of compost, which improves moisture retention without deteriorating other characteristics. Weed rhizomes are selected from the soil more carefully. And when placing plants, it is worth controlling the distance between the bushes more strictly in order to provide them with a larger area of nutrition and moisture absorption.

In such a flower garden or bed, easy maintenance is one of the main advantages. In order for the plants to please for many years, you need to take care of several annual procedures:

  • remove dry plant residues, leaves and debris, dry clumps in early spring;
  • plant overgrown plants in a timely manner, not allowing the center of the curtains to be exposed;
  • pruning early flowering bushy perennials after flowering, so that their greens grow better in the summer and slightly shorten the shoots of those perennials that they want to give a more compact and dense form;
  • Maintain a good layer of organic mulch (where no decorative coating is used);
  • if there is time and opportunity - cut off wilting inflorescences and flowers to prolong flowering.

Plants for places in the sun

A bright and lush flower garden in the scorching sun is not such an unattainable task. Of course, something will have to be sacrificed, and plants that are suitable for such conditions will give way to lush ceremonial flower beds in terms of showiness.

The ability to grow on southern slopes is usually listed among the virtues of perennials and annuals. One can also judge about it by the origin of the plant - the natural area, which also assumes constant overheating and the dominant dryness of the soil. But there are other criteria that you can pay attention to:

  • silvery or grayish leaves protected by dense edging;
  • narrow, grass-like, hard leaves;
  • succulent, storing type of greenery.

The ability to endure not only drought, but also heat, precisely because of these characteristics, is more fully manifested in ornamental grasses, sedum, wormwood, thyme, lavender, sage and carnations.

Landscaping sites in the sun have their own favorites. These plants do not lose the ability to develop at a good pace, even where other species are far from comfortable. Valerian red, gray-haired lofant, bluehead or lavender are the best species among perennials from 50 to 90 cm in height.

Slightly lower, but also amazingly good at coping with extreme heat, white and yellow yarrow varieties (for example, the legendary "Moonlight" (Moonshine); large-flowered Gaillardia, Santolina, Steller's wormwood, and carnation offer to complement them with interesting textural contrasts.

Stunted, almost pillow-like, growing in dense clumps of Cooper's delosperm, callirove bedspread, variegated thyme, creeping stonecrops will complement the picture in the foreground or fill the clumps.

The choice is not limited to these crops only. Chinese miscanthus grow splendidly in the sun (but you need to plant powerful, adult bushes and strong delenki), perovskaya swan-leaved, fescue, knifofia, eremurus, iris, queen of endurance - echinacea. Bulbous ones such as woodlands, muscari, crocuses and species tulips are good. There is a lover of sunshine even among the lianas - a lush and not overgrown, but fast-growing Baldzhuan mountaineer. From the shrubs, it is worth choosing karyopteris.

An absolute favorite among the annuals is verbena, especially dark purple, raspberry varieties of hybrid origin and low height. Dense greenery and fragrant inflorescences, revealing their scent in the sun as much as possible even in the most modest verbena hybrids in this parameter, fascinate at first sight.

A great alternative to verbena is sage, but it does not show the same drought tolerance and, at least initially, before flowering, will require frequent watering. Cosmos are much more stable in the sun, especially varieties with a low height, which almost do not lose their abundance in hot heat, as well as escholzia, zinnia and purslane - a well-known lover of the southern slopes.

When choosing such plants, you do not have to worry about changing seasons. In the spring, any plants are good on the flower garden. The greyish young leaves of yarrow and wormwood, playing in contrasts with the delicate light green color of young valerian and delosperm, will be replaced in May by pink flowering of valerian and a bright parade of verbena and delosperm.

In the summer, both Valerian and Yarrow will come to their support. And when the main stars begin to fade, the luxurious wormwood foliage, with its silvery texture and lace shape, will revive the picture again. Silver wormwood will brighten up the fall, although many plants in the ensembles will be able to please with continued or repeated flowering. And delosperma will pleasantly surprise you with the blush of the leaves.
