The smell of raspberries for me is strongly associated with childhood - the gentle hands of my grandmother and amazingly delicious jam, which was given out with teaspoons and only during a cold. Even then, I dreamed that I had a lot of raspberries. My dream has come true, every year I harvest a double crop. The first one is from ordinary raspberries and distillations of the second year of remontant. And in the fall - the second - 3-5 glasses a day from the repairing first years. Through trial and error, I figured out how to achieve a good harvest and preserve raspberries during the harsh winters of the Volga region with little snow.

The raspberry varieties I grow

The most common garden raspberry is unpretentious, tenacious and constantly strives to occupy new territories. New shoots appear in abundance from the rhizome. They grow gradually, if the growth of the culture is not limited to a sheet of slate or iron dug into the ground.

I have several varieties of raspberries growing on my site, which have passed a rigorous selection on the principle "I want it this way." Each type is tasty and has its own characteristics. Among my favorite varieties are selected early, large-fruited, late, remontant.

  1. Raspberry "Gusar" has conical dark red berries that ripen from July. Universal application, very good in jam and freezing. The bushes are tall and require a garter on a support.
  2. The Kirzhach variety is unpretentious, resistant to most pests. Fruiting in late July-August, the yield is friendly. Perfect for preserves and preserves. A good portion for canning is collected in a few days.
  3. I liked the "Ruby Giant" raspberry for its large fruits with a slight sourness in taste. It is a pity that by the fourth year it was significantly reduced. Probably, somewhere I did not finish.
  4. The Atlant variety perfectly tolerates frosts even without a snow cover.
  5. Raspberry "Sweet yellow" - is afraid of frost, but with proper care it produces a yield of 2.5-3 kg per bush.

A year ago, I ventured to plant the Black Diamond Black Raspberry. I was surprised by the taste - almost without acid, the size was not impressive. While I left it, I will look at its development.

I tried to pick up not only garden, but also remontant varieties of raspberries. Of these, she gave preference to "Cap of Monomakh", "Hercules" and "Orange Miracle".

I planted red and yellow varieties on different sides, giving them the sunniest places on the site. At the same time I use the fence as a support and protection from the wind.

The main differences in the care of regular and remontant raspberries

Features of autumn care for raspberries depend on its type, the main difference is in the timing of pruning and preparation for winter.

I prune garden raspberries after fruiting. I remove the shoots of the second year under the root, thin out the first years. The peculiarity of this species is its tendency to overgrowth, so that it is necessary to cut out the extra shoots that thicken the raspberry tree throughout the season.

The remontant varieties do not have such a problem. There, in order to share the distillation with neighbors, you have to patiently wait for its appearance. In autumn, pruning is postponed until the end of the second fruiting. In some varieties, it lasts until the first frost, which makes it difficult to determine the timing of pruning.

For any raspberry, autumn activities are important, allowing the bushes to successfully overwinter and quickly come out of hibernation in the spring.

Pruning raspberries in autumn

The most important step in leaving. If you ignore it, the berries will gradually become smaller, and their number will noticeably decrease. There are serious differences in the timing and methods of pruning garden and remontant raspberries.

Pruning garden raspberries

It begins to bloom in the second year and, after fruiting, is cut out at the root, giving way to new shoots. In autumn, up to 8-10 shoots per 1 m² are mercilessly thinned out.

By the way, the end of September until October 15 is considered a good time to plant new bushes. So if the neighbors asked to share, don't be greedy. It is enough to pry on the selected process with a shovel, chop it off from the main rhizome and give it over the fence, giving good words.

Sick, weak, damaged stems are completely cut out. In first years, the tops of the heads are shortened by about 1/3 of the height.

Pruning remontant raspberries

For this type of raspberry, it is important to determine how many crops you want to get from it per season. Unlike ordinary, remontant is capable of bearing fruit twice per season. At first, shoots of the second year give fruit, and by the fall, ovaries are formed on one-year-olds.

If you need to achieve a massive collection of berries, then all forcing are cut off at the root. But then the meaning of the remontant view is lost. The harvest will please, but it will be 2 weeks late.

If you want to feast on raspberries all summer before the first frost, you will have to do selective pruning. After the second year of fruiting, the stems are removed. It is very easy to distinguish between them. They are the thickest and begin to dry out by October. For first years, I trim the tops. The fruits will no longer be tied on them, the peduncles will begin to form on the lateral processes, which will go from the main trunk in early spring and give the first early harvest.

The optimal time for pruning remontant raspberries for central Russia is in early and mid-October. With a favorable forecast for a warm autumn, it can be held on the 20th.

Top dressing raspberries in the fall

I use an alternation of organic and mineral fertilizers for raspberries. I don't focus too much on this, since initially raspberries are capable of growing on very poor rocky soils. But if you want to take off an enviable harvest next year, you still have to feed it.

In autumn, preference is given to potash and phosphorus fertilizers. They strengthen the plant's immunity, create a supply of nutrients for the coming season, and increase the chances of a good wintering.

It is convenient for me to work with monophosphate. It already contains both elements, it is enough to add 35-40 grams for one plant. You can also use superphosphate in combination with potassium sulfate at 40 and 20 grams per 1 bush, respectively.

I use organics as mulch, covering the raspberry trench after trimming with a peat pad. I apply the rotted manure every 2-3 years in a thin layer, be sure to dig up the ground. It both warms and gives the necessary feeding in the spring. You can use compost at the rate of a bucket per square meter.

Cleaning the soil near raspberries

When leaves begin to fall from the bushes, you want to be lazy and leave everything as it is. This cannot be done. In the raw mass, fungi, bacterial rot and all kinds of pests joyfully breed. New varieties of raspberries were created with a high level of immunity, however, there is no need to create prerequisites for the development of diseases.

After trimming, all garbage is carefully removed and must be burned away from the raspberry tree, preferably in an iron barrel. Then I use the ash for feeding.

After cleaning the soil, I must dig shallowly with a pitchfork. At a depth of 15-20 cm, pests arrange winter minks, they must be destroyed, otherwise no spraying will help.

Treatment of bushes from pests and diseases

Many insects want to feast on raspberries. Most often, you have to deal with such uninvited guests:

  • weevil;
  • raspberry beetle;
  • stem fly;
  • mole;
  • glass case;
  • galitsa;
  • aphid;
  • scoop.

After pruning, it is worth treating the bed of your choice with Aktara, Karbofos, Vertimek solutions. They will destroy pests and their larvae on the shoots remaining for the winter.

Raspberries will be protected from common diseases by processing with 3% Bordeaux mixture.

Protecting raspberries from frost

In the Volga region, winters are characterized by severe frosts down to -30 … -38 ° С, which last for 2-3 weeks. For trimmed raspberries, they are not terrible, and the remaining first-year forcing may suffer.

I bend them to the ground by about 30-40 cm and fix them with wire or forks from bent reinforcement. After the snow falls, I go out with a shovel and throw a snowdrift higher on the raspberries. In addition, I do not hide, these measures are enough.

By the way, a neighbor, looking at my ritual dances in the raspberry, has been smiling slyly for several years now and is simply mowing his raspberries at the root. An ordinary braid. Moreover, in the spring, she also throws out the distillation in unison and begins to bloom. But my harvest ripens earlier and the berries are much larger.

How to proceed is up to you. I pay close attention to raspberries and carefully prepare them for winter. I just love these fragrant berries very much and do not want to lose my bushes in the frosty winter.

I wish you too to keep the raspberry bushes unharmed and rejoice in the spring of the friendly ovary of the berries you loved since childhood!
