The most vivid childhood memories are the beginning of summer and strawberries … The incomparable aroma of ripe berries warmed by the sun … In June, we went to the forest and picked wild strawberries in sunny meadows. They ate the garden one - large and sweet - before mom or grandmother found time to collect it for jam … Everyone should have such strawberry happiness - both children and adults. What kind of strawberries (forest and garden varieties) grows in my garden today, I will tell you in this article.

Forest strawberries on our site

The plot, which we bought in the fall when we moved to the Kuban (foothills), borders on a forest. The flat part turns into an ascent - to a low (20 meters) slide. A young garden grows on the terraces of the slide.

The entire hill and part of the site are overgrown with wild, incredibly prickly blackberries - this is a huge fat minus. Since February, they began a consistent struggle with blackberries, cutting out, pulling out 3-4-meter thorny shoots that covered the ground and rooted in all possible parts.

After removing the blackberries, on a plot of about 0.5 acres on the slope between the apple trees, they found strawberries. Left to see what would grow. As the grass began to grow, large stems were pulled out, they were mowed around - the strawberries had already bloomed by this time. And at the end of May, she thanked us for our care with a real, incredibly fragrant, sweet forest berry.

As the slope was cleared, a few more strawberries were found, smaller in size. The berries on different strawberries are different - where they are elongated, where they are round, and on one there are pink balls, moreover, the late ones ripen when the main crop is harvested, there are berries in less illuminated places closer to the forest.

Anyone who grows garden strawberries knows that forest strawberries are much more fragrant. Garden small-fruited is sweeter, practically without bitterness, more productive, "more civilized". But the forest one is many times more useful.

Now we groom and cherish strawberry meadows. We mow, pull out large weeds, cover them with ash in early spring and after fruiting. And then she copes herself.

Planting wild strawberries on the site is not difficult: in the forest, tear off the whiskers from several plants and plant, for example, bordering the lawn. If you can't escape into the forest, you can buy a glass of strawberries on the market, not eat a few berries, but knead the pulp and sow. Better, of course, in peat tablets - her sprouts are very tiny. And pour from the pallet, saturating the peat. Plant when the seedlings acquire a size at which they are no longer lost.

Varieties of large-fruited garden strawberries in my beds

We began to plant large-fruited garden strawberries in the very first spring of our stay in the Kuban. Today we have all summer - very strawberry. We grow both remontant and common varieties of garden strawberries of different ripening periods - early, middle and late.

Repairing varieties of garden strawberries or NSD

The remontant strawberry, otherwise designated by the abbreviation NSD (neutral daylight hours), is good for long, sometimes continuous fruiting during the entire growing season. It is very pleasant to eat strawberries out of season! The NSD varieties successfully bear fruit both indoors and in greenhouse conditions. Of course, there will be no summer taste and aroma, but still - berries.

Of the planted remontants, the variety of garden strawberries "Evie 2" (Evie 2) became the favorite: it begins to bear fruit very first and ends last. In our case, in the Kuban, in the open field, this is from May 15-17 to November.

The characteristics of the variety indicate that he does not like the heat, therefore, in July-August it bears fruit poorly, gives out 1-2 berries. With an abundance of heat and sun, the berries are very sweet! Autumn, of course, is more acidic.

The bushes are compact, they can be planted tightly. There are very few whiskers, it is impossible to multiply quickly. You don't want to share the bush during the season - either it bears fruit, or the heat. It turns out an increase in a bush per year …

We also have planted the following varieties of strawberries for the garden NSD:

  • "Aromas" - good in September, the berries are beautiful, tasty (for September), there are more berries than at the beginning of summer.
  • "Capri" (Kapri) - a short bush, little mustache, a lot of berries, beautiful, dense, tasty.
  • "Caramel" - grown from seeds, bears fruit from June to October, evenly. The berries are one-dimensional, tasty. Although it "sits" in a more shaded place than the others.
  • "Queen Elizabeth" - large berries, bears fruit in waves, the most abundant fruiting - at the end of May.
  • "Monterey" (Monterey) - powerful bushes, sweet, large berries, bears fruit abundantly in early June, then - weaker.
  • "Florina" (Florina) - medium, shiny berries, bears fruit from mid-June until frost, peduncle behind peduncle.

All varieties of strawberry garden NSD give little mustache, all strength goes to berries. At the same time, every year the forces are less and less. Therefore, it is advisable to take care of reproduction already in the first year of cultivation. All bushes work well for 2 years, then the plantation has to be renewed.

Early varieties of garden strawberries

The undisputed leaders among the early varieties are Gariguette garden strawberries. Elongated, conical berries of amazing taste! Fruiting from the 2nd half of May, abundantly, eaten almost completely fresh. Home and guests first of all go to the beds with this variety. The bushes are powerful, the peduncles are long, there are many berries. There are also many mustaches, so it is not difficult to reproduce.

Besides Gariguetta, I really like Vima Zanta. This variety was grown in the Khabarovsk Territory, and there it was at its best. Its berries are relatively light in color, but sweet even when grown in partial shade. And the berries have a rather delicate structure: eating from a bush is the very thing, but probably not suitable for transportation and storage. We eat fresh, what we haven't eaten - for jam.

The garden strawberry "Czech Beauty" is very good - large, dense, sweet, aromatic. Powerful bushes, thick peduncles. It tolerates drought well, which is important for us. This one can be transported and stored. You can freeze - when defrosting, the berries do not lose their shape. Only here it takes up a lot of space in the freezer because of the large fruit size.

"Mashenka" ("Moscow Jubilee") in our conditions is very sweet and fragrant. As well as "Vima Zanta", it is not suitable for transportation and storage - the pulp is very tender. And the shape of the berry is either a comb or an uneven cone. It is also better to eat it from a bush.

Early varieties of garden strawberries were also planted:

"Darselect" (Darselect) - tasty large berry, but requires regular watering and is heavily affected by the tick. I had to move her away from the rest.

Early ducat is a sweet and beautiful berry, but it also does not tolerate drought. And very "mustachioed".

Kimberly» (Vima Kimberly) - a good, reliable variety of sweet and fragrant berries, tolerance to drought and heat. Feature - berries ripen for a relatively long time. The very taste, when the berries are completely colored, you have to walk around and check them regularly.

"Olvia" - apparently, sits in my wrong place - in partial shade. Large bushes, large berries, but the taste has not yet impressed, goes to jam. I'll try to transplant.

Mid-season varieties of garden strawberries

I have two middle-grade - "Marshal" (Marshal) and " Roxanne" (Roxana), very different "baleen": "Marshal" gustousy, "Roxanne" is almost beardless. The berries of both varieties are large, beautiful, sweet, but not outstanding. In the wet winter at "Roxanne" two bushes fell out, despite the raised beds.

Late varieties of garden strawberries

It is difficult to objectively assess late varieties after eating sweet early, medium and remontant garden strawberries. And yet the Great Britain variety stands out - powerful bushes with large sweet berries.

A very good end to the main strawberry season, when, having eaten all kinds of garden strawberries, you find that not all the tastiest things have been eaten yet! The flesh of the berry is quite dense, the berries themselves are glossy, beautiful, even. It's nice to see and eat.

I liked the "Polka" - sweet smooth berries, healthy bushes, drought-resistant and heat-resistant, fruitful and beautiful. In the very sunshine, in the July heat, it produces flower stalks one after another - a feast for the eyes! And delicious.

We also have such varieties of late strawberries:

"Senga Sengana" is from the area of nostalgia, it is not impressive against the background of other varieties.

Mitse Schindler» (Frau Mieze Schindller) - feature of this berry felt the last year alone. The berries have acquired a unique aroma and taste, from my point of view, they are already overripe. Refined taste. Otherwise it loses in all respects - yield, size of berries, appearance and drought tolerance. In a dry summer, even with watering, the berries are approximately the same as our wild strawberries.

Zemklunika

Well, here I have a traditional "Merchant's wife", which is better to eat without looking too much - there is no particular beauty in it. I would even say unpresentable appearance. The conflict of form and content, because it tastes great.

It is, indeed, a sweet berry, without a hint of acid and with a pleasant aroma. Moustached earthworm, grows well. The bushes are tall, healthy, there are a lot of berries.

My Strawberry Tricks

In the Kuban, there are no special problems in growing garden strawberries - with an abundance of sun and warmth, it grows sweet without unnecessary tricks. May and June are rarely dry, our soil is clayey, so there is enough moisture to pour the berries. True, the remontant has to be watered regularly during the hot and dry months.

I feed with ash, which is a lot and which all kinds of strawberries love very much. Freshly cut grass serves as mulch. The black non-woven material did not take root - my strawberries grew very poorly on it. Maybe the topsoil is too hot.

The problems faced are birds, slugs and grape snails. Laying the peduncles on plastic forks or sticks stuck into the ground helps from slugs, and shelter from birds and snails with a construction mesh.

In the Khabarovsk Territory, where we lived before, there were slightly different problems, the main one was wintering. By chance, a successful version of sheltering the berry for the winter turned out: they installed low arches and covered the young strawberry with a double layer of covering material.

It suddenly rained in early November, and the next day everything froze. The strawberries turned out to be a warm house, which saved them both during snowless frosts and then when the snow fell.

Garden strawberries (by the way, "Vima Zanta", "Mashenka" and remontant "Moscow delicacy") in the spring quickly started to grow and bore fruit abundantly. We then repeated this option - covered and poured from a watering can in the cold. Roses, by the way, also winter better with such a shelter.

PS Good strawberry is grateful. And gives us a piece of childhood at any age …
