Why is it important to water the strawberries properly?
After the snow in the country has melted in spring, the path of strawberries begins from flowering to fruiting. During this period, proper care will help grow a healthy, tasty strawberry crop.
You've probably noticed that sometimes strawberries are tasteless, faded, shallow, dry or too watery - all these are signs of improper watering and nutrition. Strawberries can also get sick due to improper watering.
Water is a catalyst, a source of plant growth and development. Water dissolves nutrients in the soil and is a vehicle for them. All biological processes of plant life take place in water. Water protects plants from overheating and hypothermia. Most of the mass of berries, fruits and vegetables is water.
Not any water is suitable for watering plants in the garden or vegetable garden, but only that which corresponds to drinking water in terms of mineral and bacteriological indicators. Artesian, rainwater and water from clean reservoirs are suitable for irrigation, but with low acidity (alkaline), high content of chlorine, fluorine, sodium, absolutely not.
If an industrial enterprise operates next to a reservoir that discharges waste into water, then you should not use this water for irrigation, especially in eco-farming.
Strawberries are one of those crops whose good harvest is directly related to the quality of irrigation.
Tips on how to properly organize watering strawberries:
Tip 1. Since the root system of strawberries is on the surface, immediately after the snow melts in the spring, it already lacks moisture. In April, it is already possible to start watering the plantings, while simultaneously cleaning the plantings, pruning the leaves that have died during the winter, loosening the soil and feeding.
Tip 2. Water can help you fight various insects and pests. In the spring, a few weeks after the snow melts, pour hot water at 60-70 ° C. At a depth of 10 cm, the water will already cool down to 30 ° C, so you will not burn the root system, but pests and insects will die.
Tip 3. To improve the flowering and fruiting of strawberries, it is important to add organic fertilizers to the ground before watering. The most affordable and effective remedy is the Leonardite humic soil conditioner for organic farming. The humic acids included in its composition restore soil humus, saturate the earth with macro- and microelements, improve the structure of the soil, promote self-cleaning of the soil from harmful substances and normalize the pH of the soil. Applying a soil conditioner to the soil and then watering it abundantly creates a healthy, nutritious environment for a rich, tasty, environmentally friendly strawberry harvest.
Tip 4. The optimal amount of watering strawberries in spring is 2-3 times. The first time - after winter, the second time - before flowering, and the rest of the watering - throughout the entire fruiting period. In August and September, no more than two waterings are performed per month.
If you are growing crops under protective agrofibre or black plastic wrap, the frequency of watering should be once every two weeks.
Tip 5. When watering, do not allow moisture to get on the delicate leaves of plants, otherwise, you will focus the sun's rays on these areas and burn the foliage. Water only the soil.
Tip 6. Water the strawberries with exceptionally warm, settled water, so you will keep the root system in a healthy state. To do this, fill up a tank of water and let it sit all day. If you pour too cold or hot water on strawberries, then you risk spoiling the plants, provoking various diseases or thermal shock.
Tip 7. During the flowering of strawberries, watering with the right amount of water is the main factor in a good harvest. Irrigation rates: 20 liters per 1 m2 of soil. With this amount of moisture, the soil is soaked to a depth of 25 cm.
Tip 8. Irrigation from a hose or watering can is the classic way of watering strawberries, but there is also a drip irrigation technology, when water passes through pipes and pours under each specific strawberry bush. Drip irrigation is especially convenient when growing strawberries under a dark film. Drip irrigation today is an affordable technology for summer residents and gardeners, which allows for optimal watering of plantings.
Tip 9. When growing strawberries through seedlings, remember that young shoots are prone to black leg disease. The main cause of the disease is waterlogging of the soil. Always check the soil for moisture, moisten the soil every 2-3 days with a syringe, after transplanting seedlings into open ground, water the plants once a week, and then, when flowering, 2-3 times a month.
Now you know how important water plays in the life of strawberries.
