It is possible to buy luxurious rose seedlings at a more attractive price in autumn, when numerous exhibitions and fairs offer a huge selection of varieties. Isn't there a reason to plant roses in September-October? At its core, the fall planting of roses differs from the spring planting in only a few nuances. Simple rules and a few tricks will help you get healthy, strong plants that will start to grow and please with the first flowers that were planted in spring.

When is the best time to plant roses in autumn?

Planting ornamental plants, including shrubs in the fall, covers a fairly long period. In fact, roses can be planted from mid-August to late October. But planting times are different for plants with open and closed root systems. And the risks over a long calendar period are far from the same.

An early planting of roses is extremely dangerous: if the buds wake up, the shoots will begin to develop, the unripe bush may not survive the winter. And late planting puts the rooting process itself at risk.

The best time for planting seedlings of roses with bare roots in autumn is rightly called the period sufficient for their high-quality rooting, but without the start of active vegetation and the growth of young shoots. For each region, it is worthwhile to determine the terms individually, counting approximately 20-30 days before the first expected freeze.

Planting roses in the third decade of September and the first decade of October is the safest option for the middle zone. With favorable weather conditions, this "pink" time can be safely extended from mid-September to mid-October.

Roses with a closed root system are planted before frost, but from mid-September the plants must be cut off and not allowed to grow new shoots, and from November they must be wrapped. The optimal period is the end of August and the first decade of September, which allows the entire bush to ripen without pruning.

When purchased at the end of October, roses can be planted in containers and kept at a temperature of about 0-2 degrees until spring planting. In extreme cases, you can dig them obliquely on the hills in the garden in large trenches about 40 cm deep and cover them with spruce branches and snow.

Choosing rose seedlings for autumn planting

With the onset of autumn, gardeners again have the opportunity to plant not only seedlings of roses with a closed root system (as in summer), but also ordinary roses with “bare” roots.

When choosing seedlings in the fall, they adhere to the same rules as at any other time:

• check the frost resistance of the variety, its adaptation to the local climate;
• clarify all the information that concerns the cultivation of the variety: the conditions to which the plant is accustomed, the care that it needs to reveal its decorative effect, whether to cover (and how exactly) the rose for the winter;
• they inspect the plants: the seedling should be with 2-4 skeletal shoots, with healthy shiny stems, roots and leaves, without signs of disease damage, traces of rot. For seedlings with open roots, it is worth checking the uniformity of root development, the presence of a large number of adventitious roots, their elasticity and condition - flexibility, cut; for roses in a container - soil condition and root ball density.

It is better to buy roses with an open root system for autumn planting just before planting. Even one day can be critical. Seedlings in containers can be bought in advance, providing the plants with care for several days or weeks before planting.

Preparing for landing and choosing a seat

For planting roses, they choose sunny, warm, protected from drafts and wind, ventilated, even or slightly elevated areas with high-quality fertile loose soil, without the risk of dampness and wetting.

The fertile soil layer and the depth of its development for roses should be at least 40 cm. Optimum pH values are from 6.0 to 7.0.

Before planting, all the necessary tools and equipment should be put in order, make sure they are clean and in working order.

But the main thing is working with soil, which includes two procedures:

1. Site preparation. For planting roses in the fall, the place can be prepared a few weeks before planting, if possible - a month or two. Work should include deep digging with careful removal of rhizomes of weeds, debris, stones, the introduction of organic and mineral fertilizers or sand, peat to correct the quality and reaction of the soil. On depleted or neglected soil, a complete replacement of the fertile layer with a substrate of high-quality loam mixed with compost or humus in equal proportions is permissible.
2. Preparation of landing pits. It is carried out 1-3 days before disembarkation. For any roses, sufficiently large planting holes are prepared with a depth and diameter of about 40 cm, if drainage is needed. When the soil is dense, there is a risk of waterlogging - drainage is prepared from crushed stone, expanded clay or brick chips - up to 70 cm deep. Organic fertilizers and a standard portion of complete mineral fertilizers are additionally applied to the bottom of the hole with depleted soil. Strong watering 2-3 days before planting will create ideal conditions for roses.

In order for the autumn planting of roses to be successful, you need to take care of the preliminary preparation of seedlings. Roses in containers are easy to cook - they are watered a day or at least 12 hours before planting.

But with seedlings with open roots, you need to work more carefully:

1. Plants are examined by shortening the roots to a length of 30-40 cm and removing leaves, damaged and dry roots to healthy tissues.
2. Shoots are shortened to 2 to 3 buds (approximate height - 30 cm). If the bush is highly branched, 2-3 high-quality, strong, well-developed shoots are left, cutting out the extra branches at the base.
3. If buds are visible below the vaccination site, it is advisable to remove them to prevent overgrowth.
4. Roses are soaked for a day or at least a few hours before planting - in water, a weak solution of fungicides or rooting stimulants. And before planting, they are kept in a clay chatterbox.

How to plant roses in the fall?

Planting should begin with loosening the soil at the bottom of the planting hole and making a small mound. The process itself is very simple:

1. The seedling is installed, evenly distributing the roots around the perimeter of the mound and in no case bending them.
2. Holding the stems strictly vertically and slightly sipping the seedling upward, add the substrate.
3. The soil is carefully tamped along the perimeter of the planting hole, monitoring the depth: the place of budding should be deepened to a level of approximately 5 cm.
4. Planting is completed with abundant watering (from 10 to 20 liters of water in several passes). After watering, re-check the planting depth and fill up the soil.

Unlike roses with bare roots, with such roses everything is very simple: the plants are rolled over, carefully removing them from the container and completely preserving the earthen lump. The planting level is controlled by the root collar (it should be located at a standard depth of 5 cm). Watering is carried out according to the same rules.

What distance to keep when planting roses?

Usually, when planting, the following distances between rose bushes are observed:

• miniature and border roses are planted at a distance of 25 to 40 cm from each other;
• park and spray roses are placed at a distance of 50 cm - for floribunda and hybrid tea varieties, up to 1 m - for some English roses (depending on the height and spreading of the bush);
• ground cover roses are planted at a distance equal to half of the estimated diameter of their crown;
• standard roses are planted at least 1 m from other large plants;
• for climbing roses, the standard remains at least 1 m distance to neighbors.

Caring for roses after autumn planting

Immediately after planting, roses are usually mulched with peat, compost, and other materials. This not only helps to keep the soil moisture more stable, but also protects the rose from unexpected sudden changes in autumn weather. However, today mulching has a much more effective and fashionable alternative.

Hilling is one of the main secrets of the rose quickly adapting and reducing the risk of losing a seedling. Many garden centers recommend hilling immediately after planting, even when planting in the spring. It speeds up rooting and minimizes the effects of negative weather factors - from temperature to sun exposure.

With the classical approach, hilling is carried out after frost, but it is better not to pull and carry out this procedure after planting. Roses are spud so that only the top of the shoots remains above the mound with a height of 10 to 20 cm.

As a rule, when planting roses in autumn, watering is carried out only in extremely dry weather.

If the varieties need protection for the winter, after the arrival of frosts, the spudded roses are covered with an air-dry method according to the standard method, or the recommendations received when buying a plant are followed.
