What is a chicken brooder?

If day-old chicks were purchased or hatched from eggs in an incubator, then in the first days of life they need optimal conditions. If babies do not have a mother chicken, they need a brooder. This unit is a ventilated box with doors and a ceiling lamp. It not only gives the light needed for babies, but also heats the "room".

For all bred poultry of day-old age in the first 3-5 days of life, the ambient temperature should be about + 34 … + 35 ° С. It's easy to maintain this in a brooder. As the bird grows up, the temperature in the device is gradually reduced.

Depending on the age of the chicks, the temperature in the brooder should be as follows:

  • From the beginning of hatching of a newborn chick from an egg and up to five days - at the level of + 34 … + 35 ° С;
  • When babies turn 6 days old and up to 10 days of age - + 27 … + 29 ° С;
  • At the age of 11-12 days, babies will feel comfortable at a temperature of + 24 … + 26 ° С;
  • After 21-30 days from birth of chickens, the optimum ambient temperature for them is + 22 … + 24 ° C;
  • From one month of age to the 40th day of life - + 20 … + 22 ° С;
  • Then the temperature in the brooder is reduced to + 18 … + 20 ° C;
  • From 60 days, domestic chickens will feel comfortable at + 16 … + 18 ° С.

Depending on the housing conditions, chicks can be reared in a brooder, for example, up to one month of age. By that time, they will fledge and will be able to feel comfortable in the chicken coop. If there is no suitable barn, then young chickens are kept in a brooder for up to two months, but at a reduced stocking density. Broiler chickens are usually kept in brooders to gain weight faster.

As a rule, 25 chickens are populated per 1 m² of area. As the chickens grow, the stocking density is reduced.

Making a box for a brooder

To make the chickens as comfortable as possible in the brooder, it is better to use wood materials for its manufacture. This can be plywood, treated boards or, for example, OSB boards. It is beneficial, of course, to use the materials that remained after the construction or repair of a house, a barn, and other summer cottages.

First, you should decide how many livestock you plan to keep. If you want to breed several dozen chickens, you can make the brooder multi-storey. In this case, it will represent several boxes that stand on top of each other. This saves horizontal space by using vertical. Usually such a box is made closed on all sides. A plastic mesh is installed on the front wall for ventilation, through which pets are clearly visible.

A similar mesh is also installed on the floor. Then the droppings, penetrating through its holes, fall into the pallet fixed below. As a result, the chicks will be dry and the brooder will be clean and the maintenance work for the poultry farmer will be much easier. For free access to the brooder, a door is also made on the front wall that can be opened at any time.

So, in order to make a brooder with your own hands, you will need:

  • plywood 1 cm thick or OSB boards;
  • bars;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • plastic mesh;
  • metal corners;
  • tools.

The approximate dimensions of a brooder for chicks are visible in the following photo. This can be fixed later on the outer wall of the barn if you will grow pets in the summer in a region with a warm climate.

But you can make such a brooder for closed content. The length of the device can be 1.5–2 m. The height of the structure is from 55 cm, and the width is from 60 cm. There are doors on the front panel.

If you are building an outdoor brooder, you can open it with a sloped roof. It consists of two parts, which are held together by door hinges. At any time, it will be possible to raise a part of the roof in order to do some manipulations inside the box.

If the space does not allow, the brooder can be made smaller. For example, the width is 60 cm, the height is 28 cm, and the length is 1 m. But chickens should also be accommodated in it in smaller quantities.

After you decide on the size of the structure, you need to prepare the materials. Saw boards or plywood into rectangles. You should have 3 rectangles of the same length, which will become the back wall, roof and floor. In this case, the floor is made of plywood. Two small identical rectangles will become small sides.

Now, bars are attached to the edges of the rectangle, which will be the roof, along the perimeter. The same ones are fixed on small sidewalls, for each - 2 pieces.

Then it remains to assemble the box, attaching plywood sheets without bars to the blanks with bars. Details are fixed with self-tapping screws. Next, you need to make the doors from bars covered with mesh, put them on the hinges, and fix them on the front of the box.

If you are going to make a brooder with a mesh floor, then you need to make the base of the floor from bars, form a side from the board at the bottom in front. Then the mesh is attached to the base of the floor using self-tapping screws. So that it does not sag, making a wooden base, fasten it with additional short bars, placing them across.

Below the mesh floor there will be a plywood platform that slides out. Dung will accumulate here, which is removed as needed.

To make the plywood last longer, it is covered with an antiseptic impregnation that is harmless to chickens, and during operation, paper, newspapers or wood shavings are placed here.

If you use a mesh floor, then it will become ventilation at the same time. In this case, you can make plexiglass doors. If the floor is wooden, then it is necessary to make holes for air in the sides of the brooder.

Lighting, feeder and drinker

Now it remains to hang one or two infrared lamps from above under the ceiling, which will give light and heat. They must be immediately attached to the thermostat, thanks to which you can set the desired temperature. Lamps and a thermostat will have to be bought. There are quite democratic and effective models on sale.

The heating lamps are fixed in such a way that if the chicks get hot, they can move to a cool corner.

Even in the brooder, you need to arrange a feeder and a drinker. To keep the inside of the box clean, usually the feeder is fixed at floor level from the outside. Moreover, it is the same length as the brooder itself. So that the chickens can get here, a wooden plywood board is installed on the front wall below, in which round windows are drilled. They need to be well processed with a sander or sandpaper so that the pets do not get hurt on sharp edges. Chickens will poke their heads into these holes and get to food.

Or you can fix the feeder on one side of the floor inside, making it metal. It is a small rectangular box, which is closed from above with partitions. The distance between them is such that the chick can stick its head in and get food, but at the same time not trample it.

There are various drinkers for chicks. You can do it yourself by turning the jar of water over onto a suitable dish. In this case, the liquid will be poured out in small quantities, filling the tray, the chickens will be able to drink from here without polluting the water. Hanging plastic drinkers are also an excellent option, which also prevents babies from contaminating the water.

Brooders for other poultry

By the same principle, it is easy to build a brooder with your own hands and for young animals of other poultry - turkeys, quail, goslings, ducklings.

The quail brooder is quite compact as these animals are small. For quail, it is best to place an infrared lamp on one side of the brooder. When the birds get hot, they can be on the other side. A brooder for quails can be made for individual sizes, but at the same time its width should be at least 40 cm, and its height should be about 25 cm.

Turkey poults are a larger bird, so the dwelling for them should be of the appropriate size. Brooders for turkey poults can be made in the same way as for chickens. The length of such a device is at least 120 cm, the height and depth are from 60 cm.

For goslings, ducklings, you can make a brooder exactly the same as described above for chickens.

By the way, for broiler chickens and quail, such a brooder can become a permanent home. And there will be no need to tinker with additional buildings when these birds mature. The only thing (in the case of broilers) with an increase in the body weight of the livestock, their number in the brooder must be reduced by settling the grown poultry in other brooders.
