If you want to breed poultry with a prerequisite that it will not make noise and annoy neighbors, then the Indo-duck (muscovy duck) will be your excellent choice. They just emit a soft hiss and coo quietly. At the same time, Indo-women are almost omnivorous. There are breeds of very beautiful color, so you can also admire such pets in the yard. Unlike regular ducks, musky ducks have lean, dietary meat. This is another plus in favor of their content. Muscovy ducks are also wonderful hens. They will hatch not only their own, but also other people's eggs. You can easily lay eggs of chickens, guinea fowls and other poultry under them. And the last argument in favor of Indo-Ducks is that they are rather large birds, which means that it is profitable to keep them.

What kind of Indoor women are there?

Indo-women are native to South America and Mexico. Due to the warm climate of these regions, these birds are not genetically inclined to accumulate fat. This makes their meat more useful, but also places a greater responsibility on the house. Indeed, due to the lack of fat, they are more susceptible to colds. Therefore, a warm poultry house is needed to keep muscovy ducks, and Indo-girls are allowed to swim only when the weather is really warm.

The main feature of these birds (hence the name - musky ducks) is a warty growth near the beak. It tends to secrete fat, which smells like musk.

Compared to regular ducks, musky ducks are stronger and more stocky. They have a wide breast, which weighs about 800 g. But this part of the carcass is especially appreciated. On average, females weigh about 4 kg, males - about 6 kg. In a year, an Indo-female lays 80-110 large eggs, each of which weighs about 70 g.

Whereas wild muscovy ducks are mostly dark in color, poultry can be of various colors. Breeders have done a great job - modern breeds of musky ducks not only have sufficient weight and good health, but also boast beautiful plumage.

When classifying individuals on this basis, the following types can be distinguished:

  • Black Indoor women have black feathers, which are purple on the sides, and green on the back. Their down is gray.
  • White Indo-girls have yellow paws and gray eyes.
  • Black and white musk ducks are distinguished by black plumage with a purple or greenish tint, and white spots are located on the chest and head of such birds.
  • The blue Indo - ducks have gray-blue feathers, expressive brown eyes. The birds look very decorative. They are often kept just for "beauty".
  • White with a pattern, Indo-women are distinguished by their white plumage with black spots. The eyes are brown, the beak is bluish-red-black.
  • In white-brown Indo-ducks, the breast and head are white, the rest of the body is brown, slightly tinted green. The legs are dark, the beak is red.
  • Brown muscovy ducks are chocolate-colored, with hazel eyes and a red beak. These Indo-girls are also very decorative. They weigh less than their other species.

Where to keep the Indoor?

If you will breed this bird all year round, then you must immediately provide for a warm barn for it. In winter, the temperature in it should not be lower than + 10 ° С, and the optimum temperature at this time of the year is + 14 … + 20 ° С. Therefore, usually a barn for keeping Indooks is built from blocks, bricks or wood. In the latter case, it is necessary to provide for how the walls will be insulated or immediately make them from a log or bar. It is better to whitewash the walls from the inside so that there is no dampness, infection and fungus in the barn.

The optimal height of such a structure may be a little less than 2 m. There should not be many windows - Indo-women feel comfortable in the twilight. Keep this in mind if you are making artificial lighting in your duck barn.

The floor in the room is covered with straw. Roosts for Indo-girls are like narrow benches about 15-20 cm high from the floor.

You can make a bird feeder with your own hands from boards 25 cm wide and 110 cm long.Please note that during a meal, all the indocks should be placed at the same time near the feeder, sitting on both sides. Birds must have access to water that they can drink, but not swim when it's cold.

When keeping in a 3 m² house, it is optimal to settle no more than 9 individuals. Provide walking for the Indoor, they need it in the warm season. Here you need to put shallow containers of water in which they will swim if the air temperature is above + 20 ° C.

A fence for a place for walking is made 100-150 cm high. But, since Indo-girls can take off well, their wings are still clipped. Interestingly, only the primary feathers on one wing can be trimmed for each individual. If you do this on two wings, the bird will still be able to take off.

Feeding features

Adult Indo-women are given food 3 times a day. When grass grows, it takes up a tenth of the diet. In winter, instead of green grass, the birds are given grass meal, silage and legumes. You can feed the Indo-duck with ready-made mixed feed for poultry or make the mixture yourself. The percentage of the same product may vary depending on the season.

The winter diet of one Indo-duck per day may look something like this:

  • barley - 20 g;
  • bran - 15 g;
  • wheat - 30 g;
  • oats - 20 g;
  • meat and fish meal - 10 g;
  • potatoes - 30 g;
  • raw beets - 20 g;
  • chopped silage - 20 g;
  • salt - 1 g;
  • shells and chalk - 8 g.

Summer ration for one "person":

  • 30 g of barley;
  • 30 g of wheat;
  • 20 g oats;
  • 8 g mineral supplements in the form of chalk and shells;

You can add corn, peas, lupine to the Indo-Duck diet in any season.

Breeding offspring

If you want not only to keep the Indo-cows for slaughter, but to breed, one drake is needed for 4-5 females. He is ready to mate at the age of 7-8 months, and the female becomes sexually mature at 4-5 months. Indo-females can mate twice a year: the first - from May to early summer, the second time - from late summer to October.

Females in the new season begin to lay in late winter or early March. But these eggs are only good for food, they are not fertilized. And already in mid-April, you can begin to collect fertilized eggs and put them under the hen.

It is necessary to provide for a dry place for her, where no one will disturb. You need to put a feeder and a drinking bowl next to it. Straw is laid in the nest. Occasionally, the hen will get up and go out into the yard, then you can put other eggs in the nest. In about a month, ducklings will hatch from them.

The kids are examined. The sick and the weak are culled out or fed separately. Such ducklings are not suitable for breeding, but they are quite suitable for keeping for slaughter.

Indoor can also be hatched in an incubator. The hatched babies are kept in a brooder for about two weeks, then transferred to the poultry house, after the third week they are sent for a walk. At the age of one month, the ducklings will already swim in a shallow body of water.

The following diet is recommended for babies:

  • on the first day - hard-boiled eggs;
  • for 2-3 days, egg porridge with the addition of bran;
  • Day 4 - crushed millet or grain, boiled egg, cottage cheese, finely chopped greens;
  • 5th day - finely chopped meat waste is added to the above food, thus they are fed until the 9th day of life;
  • on day 10, boiled potatoes are also introduced into the diet;
  • on day 20, crushed grain is added to boiled potatoes;
  • starting from the 40th day, young animals are gradually transferred to the "adult diet".

Newly hatched ducklings are fed 6-8 times a day for up to 7 days, by two weeks, the frequency of food intake is reduced to 5-6 times. When the chicks are one month old, they are fed three to four times a day.

When can I get meat from Indo-girls?

If it is planned to obtain offspring from Indo-ducks, the healthiest females are selected from among all, they will lay eggs. The drake should not be related to them. Therefore, males are often purchased separately.

Males go to slaughter at the age of 3 months, and females - at 2.5-3 months. Poultry is not fed 4-6 hours before slaughter. Water is given in limited quantities. After slaughter, the carcass is scalded with boiling water, immediately cut.

Fans of foie gras delicacy, 2-3 weeks before slaughter, intensively feed the birds with a mixture of flour, grain, steamed or boiled peas. Then the liver of the Indo-Ducks weighs about 0.5 kg.
