Skeptics will ask, why “invent” some natural remedies, if you can install mosquito nets on all windows and doors of the country house, and while relaxing in the garden you can use pharmacy ointments-sprays and various industrial “stinks”? Well, first of all, it is not always available (forgotten, run out, not bought, not installed, expensive, etc.). And, secondly, some of the advertised repellents are not very good for health. At the very least, they can cause allergies. After all, it's not for nothing that many labels say “not to be used for children under 3, 6, etc. years ? And truly safe and effective repellents are expensive. Moreover, as a rule, they are natural, created on the basis of essential oils of plants. And these plants in our country house - darkness! Why not try using their mosquito repellent scent?

The power of plants from mosquitoes
By and large, the action of all repellents is aimed at hiding the smell of a person from an insect. For female mosquitoes, we, in the literal sense of the word, smell of blood, which they need to breed. Mosquitoes don't see us, they smell us. But, if we disguise ourselves from them with extraneous odors, there is a hope that they will not notice us. At the same time, keep in mind that essential oils, which are part of plants and give them aroma, begin to be released very actively only when plants are damaged.
That is, the lavender bush that grows under your window is unlikely to scare off mosquitoes from the window in the neighborhood. But if you cut this lavender during flowering and hang it in the form of a sachet at the head of the bed, the chances of a good night will increase significantly. (If lavender does not scare away mosquitoes, then at least it will calm down …).
What plant smells scare mosquitoes away from humans? At least bird cherry, elderberry, geranium, citronella, conifers, citrus fruits, mint, lemon balm, thyme, garlic, etc.
The smell of pine, fir, juniper has a beneficial effect on people. It is very useful for a person to inhale these aromas. But mosquitoes do not like such "ambrosia". If you do not have mosquito nets on your windows, try to kill all the mosquitoes you can reach before going to bed, and from those that remain, “hide” behind a gorgeous bouquet of cut juniper twigs.
Another option is to take elderberry leaves, chop them with a knife or shear them with scissors, put them in a bowl. Place it on the windowsill. Mosquitoes will not be so happy to enter a room through an open window. When the leaves are dry, replace them with fresh ones.
In the same way, it is easy to make natural mosquito repellents from other listed plants and their fruits. You can cut, for example, a lemon in half, lightly stick a few cloves into the pulp and place these fragrant repellents next to the bed and on the windowsill.
A pleasant aroma of citrus in the house is provided, and mosquitoes, in theory, should not smell your scent behind the lemon "amber". If you do get bitten by mosquitoes, there are two options: either you haven't bathed for a long time, or there weren't enough lemons per kg of "live weight".
But seriously, before you protect yourself from mosquitoes indoors, it is important to make sure that they do not get there. No mosquito nets? Build them out of pieces of gauze or other thin fabric. Or, at a minimum, do not open windows and doors with the lights on in the evening and remove all sources of standing water from the house. The power of plants does not work against human stupidity …

How to use essential oils against mosquitoes?
The list of essential oils for fighting blood-sucking insects is large. Especially popular for these purposes are the oils of all conifers, tea tree, anise, lavender and all citrus fruits. However, before using any essential oil, it is best to find out if you are allergic to it. Therefore, it is advisable to apply a very small amount of essential oil to the upper side of the palm and observe the reaction for a couple of hours. If everything is normal (no redness, rash), then you can use this mosquito repellent oil.
To use mosquito repellent essential oil, you need to mix it with a cream or unscented vegetable oil. For 2 tablespoons of cream or vegetable oil (it is better to use a base oil: almonds, apricots, grape seeds), it is enough to take 10 drops of one essential oil or mixture. Treat exposed skin.
Do-it-yourself mosquito spray can be made by mixing 100 ml of water, 10 ml of alcohol and 10 drops of essential oil. This spray can also be used to treat clothes before work or relaxing in the garden (although I would not recommend spraying expensive light outfits with such a product, stains may remain).
Essential oils can be used in aroma lamps indoors or in gazebos, verandas, in general, in places for rest. Pour hot water, 5-7 drops of essential oil into the bowl of the aroma lamp and light the candle.
A very popular natural remedy for mosquitoes that you can make with your own hands based on essential oils is a mosquito repellent bracelet. Take any bracelet made of wooden beads, drip a few drops of essential oil on it and put it on your hand. You can use natural fabric ribbons for these purposes.

Improvised means against mosquitoes in the country
But essential oils aren't always on hand either. How to be in this case? You can make do-it-yourself repellents from products that can be found in kitchen cabinets or in almost every housewife's medicine cabinet.
For example, you can protect yourself from mosquitoes for a while by lubricating areas with fish oil. Do you hate this product since childhood? Pay attention to the vanillin bags! You should like this smell, but mosquitoes, they say, are not very friendly to it.
10 g of vanillin (not vanilla sugar!) Is dissolved in 500 ml of water, then the solution is spread on clothes or applied to the skin using a spray bottle. It is also advised to pour the vanillin solution into containers and leave them in open gazebos so that mosquitoes do not annoy them during pleasant gatherings.
You can add vanillin powder to your body cream and periodically apply this mosquito repellent to exposed areas of your body.
Another option from the first aid kit is an alcohol solution of valerian. Apply to pulsating areas of your hands and feet, and behind your ear instead of perfume.
You can use a spray bottle by dissolving 10 ml of valerian in alcohol in 500 ml of water. The liquid is sprayed around itself.
The smell of cloves is very effective against mosquitoes. Pour 10 g of dried clove buds with 400 ml of water and boil for 15 minutes. We insist under a closed lid until it cools down, after which we filter and pour it into a spray bottle (today in stores you can buy small containers with spray nozzles that are convenient to carry with you). Before you start gardening, just spray yourself with clove infusion, and mosquitoes will like you less.
Mosquitoes do not like the smell of ammonia either. True, people do not like him, and many do not tolerate it, but if you are not one of them, then you can try applying a few drops to clothes or surrounding objects. Until the smell wears off, it becomes a barrier that mosquitoes are unlikely to overcome.
What to do if mosquitoes do get bitten?
Not the biggest, but still a tangible nuisance after a mosquito bite - itching. You can't scratch, because it itches even more, and by combing the bite into the wound, you can get an infection. And this is even less pleasant.
Again, special ointments and creams that relieve itching after mosquito bites can be bought at the pharmacy. And in the country or on vacation in nature, you just need to have them at hand. Especially if you have children with you. But it happens that there are no special means, but somehow it is necessary to be saved. What and how?
You can grease the bite sites with a gruel of soda or salt, ordinary greenery also helps. If a person is allergic to mosquito bites, he needs to carry with him a special product that the attending physician will prescribe in order to use this medication if necessary.
If the area is swollen after a mosquito bite, you can place a wet, used tea bag on top of it. Many people wipe the bites with alcohol or any tinctures on alcohol, vodka is also suitable for this business (externally). You can use a solution of vinegar and water (1: 2, respectively).
